No mention of Garton, Rawlins, Meaker, Claydon, Wiese? Garton and Rawlins rested for the T20 final. Claydon, Meaker and Wiese have no Sussex future. We recruited Claydon, Meaker, Thomason, Wiese, Head and Van Zyl but none of them have really been very good this season. Khan managed only three games. Bopara, Mills and Wright only play T20. The quality of recruitment will need to improve significantly. We need to sign players capable of playing all three formats not just T20. There is no point signing players for the sake of it.

However well or badly they perform against Worcester that side put out is an insult to Sussex cricket followers. Over years have enjoyed watching outstanding established players for Sussex and also watching occasional club and 2nd team games to watch some potential players for the future. To have such an inexperienced side representing Sussex is a joke. To think not long ago used to take a day of work so I could watch certain players. How can people running the club for years be still in situ. Matt Prior has been doing some coaching at the club but assume he wont be wanted after his comments

Haines looked comfortable and may have been unlucky to be out LBW. Orr has looked very determined and, to his credit, came through a sticky first 30-40 minutes. Ward struggled badly while Coles succumbed in a tough over. Whether Orr and Carter can get us anywhere near any bonus points will become clear this afternoon.

Hope we bring reinforcements in. Who is going to want to sign for Sussex? We are not a big county with unlimited financial resources and therefore very unlikely to attract any players of any quality. Don’t need unlimited financial resources, I’m only asking that we strengthen as with everyone heading for the exit. As for us not being able to attract anyone of quality, you could’ve said the same in 1997.

As for us not being able to attract anyone of quality, you could’ve said the same in 1997. But seriously who on this planet and of sane mind is going to want to sign for Sussex? The difference between now and 1997 is that twelve counties hold all the power. People on this messageboard need to wake up to the fact that having sold out to the bigger counties on The Hundred Sussex are now nothing more than a minor county. Sussex will be playing minor county cricket within five years as Durham, Essex, Gloucestershire, Glamorgan, Hampshire, Lancashire, Middlesex, Nottinghamshire, Somerset, Surrey, Warwickshire and Yorkshire break away. Be careful what you wish for! Arsenal got rid of Arsene Wenger and are now facing near certain relegation to the Championship under a rookie manager in Mikael Arteta.

The way Jack Carson is batting, he’ll be signed up for The Hundred. 254/9 and bad light. Earlier, Danial Ibrahim battled well and got an iffy lbw.

Absolutely ridiculous that Sussex think it acceptable to put out a squad of kids. We are a professional cricket club not a kindergarten. I know these games are dead rubbers but I believe you should always put out your strongest team and play to win. These are not practice games, they are games being watched by the paying public. No mention of Garton, Rawlins, Meaker, Claydon, Thomason, Wiese? Something obviously going on at Sussex and it’s not good. No reason reported why Rawlins & Thomason weren’t in squad, both more experienced than 9 of the eleven selected.

You're slowly catching on people. End result yesterday looks OK. Can't get away from the fact it still looks a 2nd team. ( I have seen better academy teams in my time) T20 takes priority this year, correctly I should add. Only chance I worry these boys will be damaged by the hammerings they will get. Greenfield, Andrew & Salisbury has much to answer. As for lacking money, what about he present building work, won't that generate some? Hasn't it generated some? Hopefully they can open the catering and that facility in the close season? I just think the wrong man (Greenfield) is in charge at the moment. Time to invest experience and GOOD youth, not all youth.

I do think the balance of the team is wrong regarding experience and youth. Both Rawlins and Garton should be playing. The Sussex management seem to have taken the approach that if you are not going to be at Hove next year you don't play. Salt, Jordan,Claydon defintely and Meaker and Thomason possibly. What about Beer? I hope Brown stays, but only as a bat. Good experience for the youth, they will need looking after. You can't just bin them while on the learning curve. Sussex fans have to be patient. There have been some excellent 50 over games. I hope for the same next season and also more wins in the County Championship.

This from the Cricketer Magazine who publish a major feature on the County Cricket Championship this month. It must be a worrying time for Rob Andrew who has gambled his reputation and the Club's on choosing youth for the County's future. My goodness, let us hope he is proven correct. Time is on Andrew's side, for now, but steady progress is essential to keep supporters onside. If Sussex aren't in Division 2 by 2024, for example, then the problems may really begin. As the County Championship returns, what is the state of play?Division ThreeSussex: Times are changing at Hove, with the emphasis on youth being taken to the very extremes under red-ball head coach Ian Salisbury. There was a debut last year for James Coles, who became the county’s youngest-ever first-class player, while Danial Ibrahim has followed as the youngest player ever to score a County Championship fifty. Archie Lenham is yet to make his red-ball bow but has impressed sufficiently in white-ball cricket that his chance may well arrive before the summer is out. Sean Hunt, Jamie Atkins, Joe Sarro, Henry Crocombe, Tom Clark, Ollie Carter, Ali Orr and Harrison Ward have all turned out in the four-day format this summer, but the county’s star youngster has been Jack Carson, the Northern Irish offie whose wicket haul is second only to Simon Harmer among the competition’s spinners. The end-of-season departures of Phil Salt and Chris Jordan have already been confirmed, while Sussex have T20 Finals Day to look forward to as well, so it will be intriguing to see how they go about the month. Fynn Hudson-Prentice, who was already due to re-join the club next year, has brought forward his return from Derbyshire and will be available for selection, but won’t play against his parent club. Tom Haines has scored 767 runs in nine red-ball games and has enjoyed a breakthrough year, captaining in the Royal London Cup. He will continue to do so: the county have announced him as their skipper for the next month, having removed Ben Brown from the role in July. www.thecricketer.com/Topics/news/county_championship_returns_state_of_play_2021.html

Having watched a lot of today's play, I think this will be a very tricky wicket to bat on for the next two days. Good effort by Sussex today.

Kids they might be but heck do they compete. I’m at the game and I am amazed at how well they are handling themselves. Orr, Haines, Ibrahim, Lenham and, of course, Carson looked comfortable batting yesterday. Ward found it tough against Leach, who bowled very well, and others. In the field today, Sarro looked out of his depth with the new ball but came back later to take two wickets quickly. Crocombe bowled well in his first spell and Ibrahim looked incredibly mature - at one time his figures were 7-4-2-3. Ward took an excellent catch off Carson and Carter looked very tidy taking a good catch. We dropped a couple of catches that would have been top notch if they had stuck. What I like about this team is the determination. This team could, if it improves in the way I think it will, do better than the supposedly team of stars that finished 4th in Div 2 of the CC. There’s a lot to be hopeful about IMHO.
Edit: I forgot to mention Hudson-Prentice. He got a first ball yesterday and today they played and missed or edged safely so that he didn’t get the rewards he deserved.
