So, what's next? Is it a T20 game, a 50-over game, a 100-ball game? No, Sussex head to Worcestershire to take part in a 4-day game for the first time since the first half of July. The match at Worcester is the first of four County Championship games that run almost back to back to the end of September. In that period, Sussex will entertain Middlesex and Derbyshire and visit Worcestershire and Leicestershire. The structure of the County Championship for the 2021 season means Sussex are effectively battling for a ranking between 13th and 18th. In the group stages, Sussex finished bottom of Group 3, three points behind Kent. Worcestershire, perhaps surprisingly, finished next to bottom in Group 1, winning just one of their ten games. This leaves Sussex, Kent and the abovementioned opponents competing in Division 3.
After starting their season with five drawn games, Worcestershire suffered heavy defeats to Durham and Nottinghamshire before trouncing Derbyshire by an innings. Another heavy defeat to Durham was followed by a stronger performance against Warwickshire that ended in a draw. Worcestershire have, this season, been a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde side in the County Championship. They have put together some strong batting performances but have often struggled to bowl sides out.
Ed Barnard and Jack Libby have both returned impressive batting averages in excess of 60. However, when you come to the bowling performances, it's hard to find anyone who has performed with any great success.
The young Sussex team will find this a tough game but if Sussex bat well, there will be a good chance of coming back with a result. It would be good to make the last month of the season a success, even if many supporters will be focusing their hopes on Saturday 18th September.

Atkins and Brown injured with a 12 man squad named that includes a potential debut for Archie Lenham, Joe Sarro and Sean Hunt. Sarro bowled 20 overs and took 2 wickets whereas Hunt bowled just five and took no wickets against Middlesex 2XI.
Haines c Orr Ward Carter wk Coles Hudson-Prentice Ibrahim Carson Lenham Crocombe Sarro
From the team that beat Worcestershire in the one-day game it is Carson, Hudson-Prentice and Ward for Beer, Brown and Head.
Average age of the team will be less than 20 with Hudson-Prentice the oldest at 25.

Everyone was obviously too polite to tell me that I had posted the date of this game as 30 Aug to 2 Aug. Anyway, it's fixed now.

Blimey, is this what it’ll be like next season? Hope we bring reinforcements in.I completely agree with AM re: The Championship. Here is the Sussex CCC squad for 2021. sussexcricket.co.uk/player-profilesNow take out: Archer (Injured or England), Bopara, Wright (both T20 only), Claydon, Head (unlikely he'll be returning), Salt, Jordan, Robinson (England full-time), van Zyl, Wiese (unlikely either will return), Beer (T20 only?)... Meaker (still be with us?) On the plus-side bring in Hudson-Prentice and Finn, then who? That means we will be left with a majority of squad where the average age is around 18 years-old. And what about those A-levels or whatever schools call them today? During that exam period will Sussex even have 11 players to put on the pitch? Surely, the club needs to sign more cricketers capable of competing in the Championship and 50 over. Also, who will be the new O/S to take over from Head? When the club media writes, "If he’s available for more games next year, then we’re keen to have him back" is that not a kind let-down?

Hope we bring reinforcements in. Who is going to want to sign for Sussex? We are not a big county with unlimited financial resources and therefore very unlikely to attract any players of any quality.

Lb,
If Covid-19 persists over the next 12 months (highly likely), Head will not return. The Australian quarantine laws are some of the most strict in the world.
Imho, he won't be returning next season.

Head hasn't been great. I would just sign someone like Babar Azam, Kane Williamson or Virat Kohli instead. I would sign Quinton De Kock for the T20.

Absolutely ridiculous that Sussex think it acceptable to put out a squad of kids. We are a professional cricket club not a kindergarten. I know these games are dead rubbers but I believe you should always put out your strongest team and play to win. These are not practice games, they are games being watched by the paying public.
No mention of Garton, Rawlins, Meaker, Claydon, Thomason, Wiese?
Something obviously going on at Sussex and it’s not good.
