After a disappointing defeat at Worcester, Sussex return to their home ground to face Middlesex. The defeat at Worcester must have been hard for this young team to take after being in a good position for most of the first three days and even into the fourth day.
Middlesex finished bottom of Group 1 in the first round of County Championship fixtures. In their ten first round games, they won two games but lost seven games, two more than any other county. Their two victories came against Leicestershire in their last game and an early game against Surrey, which they won by 10 wickets.
They have started the September games more positively with a comfortable win over Derbyshire by 112 runs in a game in which all four innings comprised scores in the 200s. Robbie White's century in Middlesex's first innings score of 288 set Middlesex on the right path while Tim Murtagh, Ethan Bamber and Toby Roland-Jones shared 17 of Derbyshire's 20 wickets.
Over the season in the County Championship, Middlesex have struggled to score enough runs. Tim Murtagh, however, has taken 44 wickets and Ethan Bamber has taken 41 wickets at a good average.
Sussex will be hoping to pick up a win in September with their remaining opponents comprising Middlesex, Leicestershire and Derbyshire. Can Sussex start with a win at Hove against Middlesex? We will have to wait and see.

Three changes to the squad with Brown, Garton and Rawlins for Coles, Lenham and Ward.

Great to see Brown back. Quality batter. Sarro to miss out.

Three in for the three who dropped out, plus Hunt plays in place of Sarro would be my selection.
Only issue is the batting order. Does Brown open and Haines drop to three? Is 4 too high for Rawlins, does Carter move up one or is that too much on top of keeping or does Ibrahim move up the order? If Garton is playing as a batter where does he come in? If we stick with the order we played at Worcester and Garton bats at 6 ahead of Hudson-Prentice, 8 for Ibrahim seems a waste.
No doubt all will be revealed in the next few days, although batting positions 3 and 4 need careful consideration.
On the subject of Ibrahim, how does he not make it in the England Under 19 first eleven? Must be a strong squad if they can afford to release him. There loss is our gain, although I suspect exposure to First Class Cricket is far better for his development.

Is Garton playing as a batsman only? He hasn't bowled a ball. 286/0 off 64 overs - tough job to keep this young team motivated in a dead rubber on a hot day in Hove with the wicket strongly favouring the bat.

Middlesex 286 - 0
Is there anyone at the ground who can comment on our performance so far?

I have been watching on the stream Flash. Seems a flat track and very good batting conditions.
Having said that, we probably could have bowled more consistently. Bad drop by Carter when Stoneman was on 61 and Middlesex were 134. He looked really good behind the stumps last week, but that is his second straightforward drop in as many innings. Something no doubt for Sarah Taylor to work with him on improving.
Haines is doing his best, but needs a break. The lack of mix between experience and youth being exposed again as it was last week at the conclusion of the Worcestershire match.
Unfair to really judge until both sides have batted, but this is already starting to have that deja vu feeling of when Kent racked up 530-1 a couple of seasons ago. Fingers crossed our batters can match theirs, but you fear what the experience of Murtagh might do to our batting line up.
We really need some performances in these last three games. A poor finish and a disappointing T20 Finals Day would not reflect well on a review of our season or the judgement of the Sussex Management.
Desparetly hoping it won't come to that and we finish strongly in both formats.

Boys' against men. Has been all year. Some of these are getting mentally destroyed. No matter what some of you say about youth, this lot mostly. have not played enough 3 day 2nd team cricket to get stamina and determination to play in tough circumstances. To learn and to have pro's to help them. Wrong strategy from Salisbury (Greenfield etc) The 4 day side is poor, inexperienced and some not good enough. T20, different team, whatever they do on finals day, it will be a plus for the club. Kent are a good side.

The highest ever 1st class opening partnership against Sussex is 378 (v Yorkshire in 1897)
EDIT: 376 - 1 The 1897 record is still intact.

There on the ropes now, I can sense it.
Grannydave is right. A team of kids and in the main homies, even I never wanted that. This isn't the way to introduce young players. At least when we bat our tail starts at four. Oh.
So we're excepting Garton as a T20 player only now? Like Salt, who's leaving. Garton next. I would if I were him.

Is Garton playing as a batsman only? He hasn't bowled a ball. Yes, according to statement from Salisbury read out on commentary.

This is beyond embarrassing, we are going downhill rapidly. I get our strategy with young players but this shambles is inexcusable.
Thanks Mr Greenfield but under your watch we have become this mess. Totally devalued the 4 day game to such an extent we have become the laughing stock of County Championship Cricket.
Please step aside for the good of the club!

Let's not panic. There is a plan. The kids are learning the hard way. As far as I can see they don't give up. Let's applaud some great batting from the Middlesex openers. I do despair when we revert to the good old days and how we did so well. This is a new era, have some patience. My top tip is to stop paying ridiculous money to T20 only players and invest in some quality batting coaches.
