Without wishing to appear overly reactionary, some of this side should never play for the county at any level ever again. Many seem better suited to operating a concession stand within the ground instead of a cricket career.

In the last 2 games the oppo have scored 1168/9
Hunt, Sarro and Hinley not good enough at this level, all look out of shape and overweight too.
Carter needs time in the 2’s and Rawlins shouldn’t be anywhere near a red ball.

Very very disappointing. More learning the hard way. The management should definitely be able to identify those who are worth persevering with. For all those sad supporters; it will get better.

It seems to me there is a fundamental difference in view between those who are making the decisions on the composition - and the direction of travel - of the Championship team, and probably the majority of the club's supporters. When Ian Salisbury says "Our job is to produce players for England"... I'm sorry but that is just plain wrong. He isn't employed by the ECB, he's employed by Sussex CCC and the overriding requirement of any professional sports team is to win matches. Producing players for England (which Sussex have done pretty well over the years) should be a by-product of building and maintaining a winning team, and in the current and previous season (albeit a very truncated 2020 season), Sussex have to date won just two 4-day matches. In the 53 years I have been watching and following Sussex I have never seen such an inexperienced team take the field on a regular basis, with the odds heavily stacked against them winning. The management may feel this is a two or three year "project", but no one is going to stick with it that long. Sussex are currently bottom of the county heap and if this were football the management would have been swept aside well before now. We know there are some mitigating factors with regard to players being called up for England - the instant success of Ollie Robinson at international level is something we can all feel pride in - but the way that experienced players are being cast aside or led to feel that there is nothing for them here, and they need to go to other counties for the sake of their careers, is truly depressing. I totally agree with flash blade and Wicked Cricket. Another outstanding Post. Completely agree with everything contained within.

This one stinks.
But, while I agree about the fatties, they need to get on that, and while it's obvious we haven't picked enough batters, with all-rounders coming in from 4 down, we should remember this - we're missing plenty. Even without Robinson and Archer, we're missing Garton, Atkins and H-P from our attack for this one. Atkins is clearly the best of the youngsters. Garton's a worry, cos he's not even injured so what's the long term plan there? Doesn't seem good.
I think Andrew & Co have got very lucky with this group of youngsters, they've been competitive on the whole. Add Finn, add Garton, add two proper bats at 4 & 5, probably OS, I'm confident we have a very promising team. Carter looks totally ready to me, Hunt's just come back, Hinley - first game, and he's a batsman isn't he? Let's not kill the kid after one game. Haines got three seasons, rightly.

Embarrassing, humiliating, pathetic, feeble, totally and utterly inexcusable. Those are just the few words I can immediately conjure up to describe the latest horror show.
A third consecutive defeat, the second by an innings and sadly even though it feels like it I suspect we may still not have hit rock bottom.
With the greatest respect, defeat against a Leicestershire side inside three days despite a day and an hour being lost to the weather who: -
• Themselves are perennial strugglers in the red ball game who have never come close to Division 1 since the inception of the two Division structure • A County who have traditionally survived on veteran journeyman and other County cast offs • In this match were missing the Overseas who has scored a bucketful of runs for them this season and arguably their best player and Captain, Ackerman • Missing their main strike bowler in the second innings who took six first innings wickets • Bowled Sussex out inside 46 overs on a flat track with little help for the bowlers in good batting conditions
I repeat I don’t think we have yet to hit our lowest point.
The Table doesn’t lie, we are bottom and deservedly so. We are now the worst red ball first class County, barring something remarkable next week against Derbyshire. There were times today when in my humble opinion we resembled a team of Village Cricketers. I will stop short of going as far as saying some of the side aren’t good enough, but completely respect the opinion of others on this forum that hold that view. I would simply say some of this team are just not ready to play at this level. Only time, further coaching and playing in the second eleven will show those who will make it and those that will not.
All we need now is another platitude from Salisbury about how the match didn’t quite pan out how we were hoping, how disappointed and hurt they all are, they are still a very young side, we have to protect them, this will further help their development and education and they are learning from every ball bowled, every dismissal and each match situation.
What I want to hear Mr Salisbury is a genuine apology to all members and supporters, because firstly this is neither good enough nor acceptable and secondly any short or medium term strategy, whilst having inevitable setbacks will have some sign of incremental progression. The only direction the red ball Sussex County Championship side is going is backwards. We are no longer competing, which as a first class professional Cricket Team is completely unacceptable. If there were relegation/promotion between league and non-league (or in this case County Cricket to Minor Cricket), we all have a fair idea where we would be next season.
Whilst I subscribe to many others views on here that Salisbury and Kirtley may well be under instruction from higher up the Management chain due to budgetary or other reasons to promote and play the youngsters, this isn’t working. They are Head Coach and Deputy and the buck stops with them. They should consider their own professional standing as this continuing shambles goes on their coaching CV’s and quite simply if they feel they haven’t been given the resources or freedom to do the job as they would like, then time to stand up to those above them and be counted.
Salt, Garton, Jordan, Robinson, Beer even Meaker and Claydon who don’t retire until the end of the season as far as I am aware were available for this match. Why did we jettison Van Zyl and Thomason early if we weren’t confident we had sufficient squad depth to remain competitive for the remainder of the season? Take a look at the side Kent, our semi final opponents on Saturday, fielded against another perennial struggler Derbyshire in the latest round of Championship fixtures. They fielded a strong side irrespective of the opposition or who would form part of their T20 line up. How many of the England side, who would have otherwise been playing against India this week turned out for their Counties? Robinson isn’t even centrally contracted. He was fit enough to play for England and as far as I am aware they aren’t playing again for a couple of months.
Whilst I truly hope we have a fantastic T20 Finals weekend and lift the Trophy, the worrying thing is any success will be used to gloss over what has otherwise been a very poor season. Yes, we have had youngsters break through, but haven’t other Counties without becoming uncompetitive and running their red ball team into the ground. More worrying is the psychological impact constant defeat has on those within this group who can go on to form part of a competitive squad in the future, our ability to retain them when they see better opportunities to fulfil their ambitions with other Counties and our aspirations to recruit from outside when prospective signings view our current standing within the County structure.
As supporters we have no right to demand success or trophies, I do believe we have a right to see the County field a consistently competitive Team. I can’t deny it hurts to be a Sussex supporter at present!!

In isolation you make some excellent points Liquid, but... Worcestershire and Middlesex came before this. 97-6 in the first innings, 3-3 in the second and then failed to defend 314 in less than 80 overs in Worcester's innings. Middlesex could probably have still been batting now if they had wanted, lost last 8 wickets for 69 in the first innings and last five for 80 in the second with Garton playing as a batsmen!! Despite the missing bowlers and the injury to H-P, time lost to the weather should have ensured a nailed on draw today, no excuse for not being able to bat 48 overs on a track not overly helpful to the bowling side. Leicestershire couldn't have believed their luck!! How many of those missing could or more to the point should have played? I accept you will lambast me for even mentioning Meaker and Claydon, but Salt, Garton, Jordan, Beer even Robinson. They are registered, fit and on the payroll, surely you play your strongest side? If not, let's just forfeit give them the points and have a round of Golf.

Interesting first line to your second paragraph…think how bad it might’ve been if some of the youngsters hadn’t produced some decent performances. Does make you wonder what the grand plan is….🤔🤷♂️

Harmes and his fellow commentator clearly not aware that they could still be heard for a little while between innings. Some seriously worrying comments. Not happy with the runs that Sussex leaked in both this game and the last game. The opposition scores and lack of wickets says it all. Let's hope Sussex can bat out for a draw. Oh do please share….🙏

Claydon would have got wickets, especially with his extra cheating powers. I'm certainly on board with GG and Beer, yeah, why not? For me though, bad luck and not picking enough batsmen is why we lost today. No point playing Salt & Jordan, a big part of me wants to drop them on Finals Day frankly. We're two OS bats and Atkins, Finn and Garton away from a very good side. A fit H-P too. It's too early to judge but if anyone wants to judge, look at Andrew & this Warren chap.

Excellent post devonexile👍👏 You are right about Saturday as well - win the T20, forum on Monday…can just picture it glossing over a disastrous four-day season and all negative, probing questions banned and not asked🙄😡
Only one thing I disagree with - Leicestershire were in division one from 2000-2003…we beat them when we won our first championship😀 (though I can quite understand if you’d forgotten as it seems like a lifetime ago, or indeed if you are doubting that ever in fact happened!)

Some real positives have swum in the deep end, luckily for Sussex.

The cynic in me makes you wonder if we’re carrying out some ECB feeder club plan…get rid of anyone with any experience, unless they were homegrown, but even the better ones of them must go, send them off to a test match ground county…flood the team with a constant flow of kids…the results don’t matter as in 2 years time you won’t be playing in the county championship as it currently is anyway….
I’m probably miles off the truth, but don’t forget, our board structure is the result of us being an ECB pioneer (guinea pig in other words)…..🤔
