After two consecutive defeats in Division Three of the County Championship, Sussex head to Leicester for their penultimate game of the season. The County Championship season has been disappointing, but there have been several good days, many individual good performances, but all too few good periods of four days. The game at Worcester looked to be winnable until the fourth day when Worcestershire unexpectedly took control. It may have been a bad toss to lose against Middlesex, but Sussex were struggling from a very early stage. Despite scoring in excess of 300 in both innings, it was never enough for Sussex to hold out for a draw after Middlesex had piled on 676.
Leicestershire's Division Three campaign started with a defeat to Kent. In a low-scoring game, Leicestershire only scored 109 in their first innings and never recovered. The scores in the remaining three innings ranged from 232 to 262 but that first innings' failure was enough to give Kent a comfortable victory by 132 runs. Callum Parkinson, however, caught eye with his nine wicket haul.
In Leicestershire last game against Derbyshire, their batsmen put them in a strong position by posting a total of 528. Derbyshire fell short and were asked to follow on 188 behind. However, their bowlers could not finish the job and Derbyshire batted out the draw with only three wickets down having overtaken the Leicestershire total. In Leicestershire's only innings, Lewis Hill scored a century while 70s and 80s were recorded by Sam Evans, Chris Wright and wicket keeper, Harry Swindells.
With those taking part in the T20 Blast finals likely to be left out of the squad for Leicester, Sussex will need to show more stability over four days to pick up a much-needed win. Can Sussex go to Leicester and get a positive result? Maybe, maybe not. What do you think?

I expect two changes with Garton and Rawlins not playing because of T20 finals day.

I expect two changes with Garton and Rawlins not playing because of T20 finals day. They'll miss Garton. Yes, and he'll miss the chance to score yet another century. What a batsman. Question, is T20 finals day some time between tomorrow and Wednesday? Play your best *** team or we'll finish bottom of the pile.

Should Rawlins play to try and get some form for T20?

Presumably they travelled up today so they know who’s gone up there, why are we the last county to name our squad?

Pleased to see Tom Hinley (585 runs @ 58.5 with 2 hundreds and 3 fifties and 16 wickets @ 18 with a best of 5-18 for Sussex Under 18s) being given a chance. Tom is a left handed batsman and bowls left arm Chinaman. I am surprised Rawlins is playing as I thought Sussex would rest him for the T20 and play Ward instead. I expect Carter, Hinley, Hudson-Prentice and Rawlins to bat at 4-7 but in what order remains to be seen.
Not playing at Leicester (of those who have played in the championship this season):
Archer (injured) Atkins (injured) Beer (T20) Clark (Injured) Claydon (Retired) Coles (England U19) Garton (T20) Head (Australia) Ibrahim (England U19) Lenham (England U19) Meaker (Retired) Robinson (England) Thomason (I think released) Van Zyl (Released)

50 for the run machine. Got the openers sorted for next year anyway.
Like this team, probably just needs a proper bat for Rawlins but like it. Good luck to Myra, the next young cad off the rank. Is it cad or cab? Either way.

Absolutely, Haines gets the plaudits and rightly so for an outstanding season in a side that has struggled.
However, let's not forget Ali Orr almost 500 runs from eleven innings with an average at almost 45. Another who has had a breakthrough season. Probably most solid opening pair since Nash and Joyce.
If Brown can nail down a slot between 3 and 5, then with a bit of sensible recruitment or even another youngster breaking through next season we may finally have a respectable top order batting line up.
I see our old friend Umpire Newell is back. Apparently according to the commentators raises his finger to give Brown out caught behind. Only problem is the keeper hadn't taken the catch cleanly. Any officiating is a really difficult job, but based on our past experiences with this guy he really worries me.
Anyone else having trouble getting the stream working?

Didn't work for me this morning, working without volume now.
Is that former Sussex bat Mark Newell?
Yeah, really impressed with Orr, and Carter too. Couple of gems there I reckon.
