Only recently been published by the bombastic Simon Heffer because they were deemed unsanitised at the time.
If politicians have never been held in lower regard than now, and why should they be when they seem to be more interested in low brow, cheesy TV programmes like I'm a Celebrity or Strictly, at least eccentrics like Wedgewood Benn and Enoch Powell had a brain and a sense of gravitas. But Chips's memoirs prove that parliament, certainly in the last century, to paraphrase Samuel Johnson has always been the last refuge of scoundrels. The diaries are more sexually debauched than Alan Clark's efforts and more self opinionated, namedropping the aristocracy with whom he partied and dined as he also backed the wrong horse in Chamberlain rather than Churchill when it came to appeasing Hitler. But he wasn't a one off dud, this was also the era of ne'er do wells like Randolph Churchill, Oswald Moseley, Tom Driberg and Bob Boothby, just some of the upper class, self entitled elite with morals of alley cats.
The likes of Angela Rayner maybe as thick as mince but better her than the like of Chips Channon and his peers.
PS Why he was nicknamed Chips is anyone's guess.
