Subdued is perhaps a good word to describe last night.
For me, it was one of the most exciting nights of cricket I've watched at Hove.
The crowd only came alive when Yasir hit the winning four. This was T20 cricket
in all its pomp and glory. And why supporters will return for more.
The party finally took off in the 'Cricketers' and 'Cafe Pasticci' afterwards, where
the after-shock and then excitement of winning finally expressed itself. One tipsy
man was so amazed and stunned, he couldn't stop saying, "And the last over was
bowled by Dernbach!" as if Mr tatoo-man was the Malinga of English cricket.
Perhaps, starting in May is a little too soon when June has been the regular remit.
Yet, we won a game we should never have won where the familiar weaknesses
from last season were on show once again.
Can Yasir please teach Chris Liddle how to bowl with guile and intelligence. After
fantastic bowling from Yardy, Liddle steps in like a bull in a china shop. It must be
deflating for those others who keep it tight. And even his 1 for 43 flattered to deceive.
It could so easily have been 0 for 49 except for a brilliant catch on the boundary rope.
Should Chris Nash have retired hurt after injuring his hamstring and allowed an in-form
Ben Brown to enter the fray? Easy to say in hindsight, but it all became rather farcical
and any momentum left after Wrights and RHBs excellent knocks were vanquished to
the crumbling seafront.
Meanwhile, Zac looked exhausted and emotionally drained after the match. He and his staff
had put their heart and soul into the marketing. While attendance figures can be vague, one
would suggest around 5,000 turned up. A good start to the 'Blast' but not as good as one hoped
given the sunny weather and the opponents. One man was ejected from the ground after a
scuffle in the north-east section but any fears of rowdy behaviour were unfounded. Some were
drunk but, here's that word again, subdued. The irony being, the teetotal family section was
less than one-third full.
Yasir... welcome home.
