We need openers. Root needs to finally step up to three, it's bizarre he hasn't taken that upon himself yet. Haines, Libby and Yates are not only the most consistent, they're young. All three were in much better form than Hameed all season and particularly the end when Hameed averaged about 20 in his last eleven innings.
Whoever starts the season best out of those three for me. Maybe all three if Root doesn't step up.
We all know the issues go a lot deeper though. Next season is the same as the last few on that front isn't it? The fact that those three have consistently scored runs in early/late season conditions speaks volumes, so where've they been?

Simply telling him to 'finally step up' won't work; he's been there, done that and has scored fewer runs. Good thing you're not England coach!

And his record at 5 is markedly better than 4 - so what? He can bat anywhere and letting him decide what's most comfortable for him is a luxury England could never afford. I'd tell him he's opening from now if he wants to continue in the job. It's a team game and he's the best player by far, he has to take on the top job, 1,2 or 3. Pathetic liberalism gets you where England are now, he isn't the boss, he's the employee. Get tough and get results. Name me a successful team that isn't tough and ruthless? Can't be done.
For the record, and it's of little relevance because he's just the best player by far, his record is this:
1/2 - 41 3 - 38 4 - 52 5 - 67 6 - 40
He's the best player, he should be batting in the hardest position.

You're very much like this England team Gordon. And the Sussex team unfortunately. When weak people lead you fall.
Tell you what else I'd do, given the Ashes are remaining in prison. I'd open with Stokes too. Root and Stokes, our two best batters.

To be fair Root isn't the problem.

Steady on, recent discussions have been both interesting and civilised. I, for one, would prefer to keep them that way. As soon as someone posts an insult, the discussion loses its impetus and folks are deterred from contributing.

But liquidskin's suggestions, such as "I'd open with Stokes too. Root and Stokes, our two best batters", are frankly silly and made for effect. Hence my riposte. But I'll heed your wishes, and leave this discussion.

Mean isn't he Flash. I think he was trying to be witty though. Well, 50% witty maybe.
I would open with Root and Stokes for the remaining two matches because there is nothing to lose. Those who do nothing... something something something, I think there's a famous quote. You like quotes Flash, what is it?
Just stand still and be rolled over like GM whatever, or flip it round and dictate the next route. Sitting ducks stagnate. I reckon I was the one who first suggested putting Brown in the top 3 for Sussex, way before it happened. Not for effect, but it had an effect.
I have to apologise to Gordon the Gopher. Sorry Gordon, I accidentally referred to GM whatever as you, Gordon. It seems I got my hatred muddled up. You, Gordon, are several levels above GM whatever as a person so again, I'm sorry.
And apologising doesn't come easy to me because apologies are for the weak. Anyway, sorry.
