I'm getting fed up to the back teeth with reading headlines that with this latest outbreak of missiles being thrown at players in football grounds represents a throwback to the dark ages of the 1980s!
Anyone who went to football matches in the 70s and 80s will tell you that hooliganism was far more widespread in the former decade. Yeah, there was no incident on the scale of Heysel in the 70s although the mighty Spurs started the trend of fv abroad in 1974 when Feyenoord got battered and it was continued by Man U at St Etienne and Leeds later on in the decade. My mates who followed BHA had far more fun in the old div 3 going to places like Swindon, Peterborough and Chesterfield back in 76/7 although they got their come uppance a year later when the still mighty Spurs caused carnage. They even took a hiding from Arsenal later on. Remember Man Us journey of destruction everywhere they visited the year they were relegated in 74/5 and by the 80s it was all quiet. Yup clubs like Chelsea, Leeds especially and Cardiff were still doing the hard yards in the 80s but overall it was a far quieter period on the hooligan front than the 70s.

Yeah Brighton is renowned for their hard boys. You don't wanna end up being caught by one or two of them I can tell ya. Ouch!
In the dark old days of the 70s I remember them saying this was like the dark old days of the 30s. I can tell you from experience, the 30s was the worst time for hooliganism that I remember. Although I wasn't around in the Noughties. It could have been worse in the noughties and considering mankind has generally got less barbaric over the years I'm gonna assume it was.
It's a good job football wasn't invented in the 5th century or something.

Brighton did have the run of the manor at Reading, Southend and Gillingham (my mate managed to bite police dog there) back in 76/7. They came unstuck against Pompey though. Hello Sailor.
