Ladies and Gentlemen This season will be my fifth season as the main moderator of this forum. You may already think that it is time for a change, but I will be retiring as the main moderator of this forum towards the end of this summer. I would welcome the idea of someone sharing duties with me over the course of this summer, particularly as I will be travelling for much of the last two months of the season. In the longer term, I am still willing to contribute to the forum, particularly if a team of three or four has an interest in growing the forum, possibly with podcasts, blogs etc. The forum has shown growth over the last two seasons and there are opportunities to take it further, I believe. The task is not especially onerous, although it does require keeping a check on things more or less every day. If you want to know more and have an interest in taking on this role, please send me a message so that we can discuss further. Thank you, longstop |

Can you pretend to moderate but not really do it or give a s**t what anyone writes?
I can do it if there's a positive answer to either of those questions. I will be tough when I'm bothered though. You'd be banned for a start. Fluffy? Gone - too many conspiracy theories. Tiptoes? Gone - too much nonsense. Gordy? Don't talk to me about Gordy, he'd be so far gone his little gofer feet wouldn't touch the ground. GM Whatever? I would fine him as well as life ban him. For three months. Joe? Out of here, Randall? No thanks.
In fact, you're all banned, I just wanna talk to myself on here.

Many thanks for the witticisms and emotional outpourings, but has anyone given any serious thought to taking over/sharing in the moderation of the forum? As I said previously, it is not especially onerous, but needs regular attention. Thanks. Please message if you would consider taking on such a role.

Unfortunately, no one has come forward offering to take over all or some of the responsibilities of being moderator of this forum. I have a number of personal and business commitments and priorities from the beginning of June which mean that I will discontinue as the main moderator from the end of this month without any help.
I am happy to share the role for the rest of this season and one of the assistant moderators has offered to continue in a support role.
I will be at the Middlesex game on Thursday and Friday if you would like to know more about what it entails. After that, I may be able to attend the first day of the New Zealand game and one of the T20s, but will be spending little time at Hove until July.
Please send me a message if you would consider taking on this role in any way.

Is the end nye for the board cos I kind of need somewhere to annoy people other than home?

I'm getting worried. It’s a fair question, so let me give some reasons in no particular order. 1) I’m not an ultra-tidy person but I’m not untidy either. A website, forum or any other online facility works better when it is tidyish. Posts on wrong threads, duplicate posts, posts that deserve new threads and the like fall into this category. 2) Every now and again, there are spats. How do you think cricket would do without umpires? I have tended to let spats go until they are going nowhere or become overly aggressive. You might say I’m too tough or too weak but no moderation just encourages things to get out of hand. I’ve been on an unmoderated forum and it soon went downhill. 3) There are occasional forum problems where it doesn’t work properly or goes down for no good reason. I try to act as fast as I can when this happens. 4) Spammers hit the forum from time to time, often in waves. This content needs to be deleted. 5) The forum, in my view, is for everybody who is interested. You can soon scare people off if the atmosphere looks unfriendly. Personally, I soon walk out of a pub if it looks unfriendly. 6) The platform we use is free but very old technology. We will need to move it one day, particularly as the owners of the platform are doing no development work to improve it as far as I know. 7) There are legal issues. I belong to a football club forum where the police became involved. The matter was not a pleasant experience for some innocent people (or some less innocent). Minimising this risk is important. I have sought free legal advice on three occasions. In the short term, having no moderator is probably no big deal, but eventually the forum is significantly more likely to die, IMHO. I could go on, but you will either accept some of my comments or parry them off in some way. As I have said previously, I would like to expand the forum but it needs a team of 4-5 people and is not a huge amount of work. |
