In the absence of a moderator, I don’t know who to ask about where I should post this thread, so I hope it’s ok here.
I wonder about what sort of CC squad we want and how well/badly the turnover of players has been managed.
3-4 years ago, we looked good enough on paper to get back to Division 1, but we failed. However, a bowling attack of Archer, Robinson and Jordan was arguably unmatched by any other county. The batting regularly underperformed.
Wind forward to 2022 and our batting is clearly improving and, assuming we don’t lose anyone, will keep improving. Has the recruitment team struck lucky with likes of Haines, Orr, Carter etc and, indeed, Pujara? For what it’s worth, Pujara has been what we hoped Head would be, except more so.
As for the bowlers, England, the IPL and injuries have decimated that attack of Archer, Robinson and Jordan. We could all see Archer’s call up coming, but Robinson was less obvious as was Jordan’s disappearance for differing reasons - IPL, England T20/ODI/England drinks carrier. Should the recruitment foreseen this? Yes. At least, partially, I would say.
It leads on to considering what strike bowlers we need. There seems to be a general consensus that we need an overseas star, but one is not enough to win games regularly, particularly if an injury removes a strike bowler. And, who should we recruit as well? A young up and coming quick?
I feel that smaller counties really can’t afford to have England players - I don’t mean financially; I mean in dependency on the stars. If Haines disappears into the England fold, it may cause us to have another bad season even if we fix the bowling.
Maybe, for the CC, we just need decent players and enough of them so that injuries do not impact too much - and, no England players. What are others’ views?
