Why the controversy?
PMI is commonplace amongst employee perks and several million UK citizens can fall back on this benefit if needed. What would be incredible in view of this man's enormous wealth and privilege which was multiplied even further when he married his monied wife is if he relied purely on the NHS for medical needs.

Not only I credible but wrong, he is not taking space that someone could use. I believe one of the perks of working for the Guardian is private medical insurance!

The point isnt that he does it was just a bizarre question to avoid, like hes trying to be a man of the people still. Asking a homeless person if hes in business goes to show how out of touch he is.

Yep, he should have just said yes I do because with my wealth it would be wrong to use up finite NHS resources.

The moral and political objection to private medicine is that NHS medics are devoting their time in the private sector to boost their already lucrative earnings which means longer waiting times for those who can't avail themselves of that service.
But in a capitalist country this is the sort of inequality that has to be factored in to the society we elect to govern us. Sunak isn't going to win Brownie points with anyone if he says he spent 45 minutes on the phone trying to get through to reception to make a GP appointment.

Former tax exile Rod Stewart, promoting a Labour Govt due to NHS waiting times saying he'd gladly pay for a number of people who haven't undergone outstanding scans blaming the wicked Tories.
This came about because he had been worried about running half an hour late for his private medical appointment, only to be told the surgery was not particularly busy.
He seems unaware that the Conservatives have increased NHS spending in real terms since they first came to power in 2010, and if all those medics working in the private sector are twiddling their thumbs its because so many NHS trained staff went private to feed the demand created by rich people like him paying extortionate sums and jumping the queue. The queue would be a heck of a lot shorter and waiting times significantly less if his private actions matched the do gooding rules he publicly advocates.
