When i heard this rumour i thought to myself i really hope this isnt true. No harm to him at all but we this is a bit similar to Mitch Claydon

But his incredibly long cricket experience would really help the Sussex youngsters ie. Stevens could become more a teacher than a player.

There is no doubt that Stevens will bring huge experience to the squad. I do worry that he has not been retained by Kent. Why? But that may be their loss and our gain. I think he would be great for the younger lads and would be a far better communicator and inspiring person than Kirtley. If he is able, he should play all formats.

I wouldn’t be adverse to a pay as you play contract but this type of signing hasn’t worked well for us recently with the likes of Bopara, Finn, Claydon and Meaker all adding to their pension pot with little return.

The problem is he wouldn't be a bowling coach as I'm not sure there'd be a huge amount in the budget for coaches with what we've got already. I'd also be surprised if we limited games he could play in by offering him a white ball only contract especially given our recent injury track record. He has strong links to Farby and my concern would be if we do this will be the second 'Jobber' we'd have signed under him and would send the wrong message to the current squad.

Although of course it could send the message that we aren’t happy to accept being the worst county in the country and that the current squad need to improve if they want to guarantee to start matches for us?

Im not sure signing a 47 year old improves us and send the exact message that we believe journeymen are the way to go. I think signing Smith is the type of signing that suggests we arent prepared to accept being the so called worse county (im sure we were one day cup semi finalists last year). I'm all for signing players that we definitely improve the squad. Sadly he wont. He's never going to get better its only ever going to be a decline. Can you imagine that medium pace on the hove pitches we saw last year!
