Starting this thread so we can discuss performances as they take place, from wherever in the world. Last winter Luke Wright and Chris Nash played in New Zealand, Matt Prior was in a place we don't mention, Chris Jordan was with the England Lions, as was Mark Robinson, albeit in a coaching role. And of course there were terrific performances from the Sussex players in the England Women's team. I'm sure there were others, particularly younger players, playing in some level of domestic competitions elsewhere.
So please post on this thread to build up a record of who is playing where and let's update it to show continued interest in our players during the winter months.

Mark Robinson is excited by his role as Lions Coach for the winter. "I was in the shake-up for the main England job and missed out there, which I was disappointed about. The ECB spoke to me at the back end of the summer about the opportunity of coaching the Lions again and I had to speak to Sussex to make sure it was okay to be released."www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/29822028

A handy update here from the club website WINTER: Update from Sharks in New Zealand and BangladeshAs well as the exploits of Luke Wright and Craig Cachopa in the Georgie Pie Super Smash, which I'm sure they take just as seriously as it's name deserves, it is also good to hear that Ashar Zaidi is amongst the runs and playing for The Legends of Rupganj against Old DOHS Sports Club. Any suggestion that the latter is the home team of Homer Simpson is, of course, quite true.

Excellent news about Zaidi. Has he turned the corner?
I chatted with him at 'The Players Awards' and one felt his early/mid season at Sussex was more about nerves and lack of confidence than actual cricketing ability.

If that's correct, then it wouldn't have been helped by the volume of negative comments on this board.

Agreed, although does he read this Forum?
One feels it was a combination of things. The leap from Lancashire League Cricket to Division 1 county cricket is huge. Zaidi needed time to re-adjust. Add to that being out of form, dealing with the general pressures of being in the public eye etc.. he was severely tested last season.
Interestingly, he told me that the home game against Lancashire when he scored 66 and took 3 wickets in the first innings - he wasn't told by Robinson that he was playing until less than an hour before the start. And this helped him deal with his nerves. So, yes, one feels nerves may have got the better of him last season and just perhaps, next April, he will start with supreme confidence.

If that's correct, then it wouldn't have been helped by the volume of negative comments on this board. Frankly, there wasn't much to be positive about. Some write eloquently on this board. Others are a little more 'direct'. I didn't read anything that amounted to personal abuse. The number seven position in the four-game remains my principal concern for the coming season, along with our ability to fulfil batting potential. If Zaidi can solve the first issue, that's great. No, but I recall a number of comments to the effect that Robbo had made a mistake in signing him. Just saying that maybe we should all wait a little longer before making disparaging remarks in future.

Spot on FB.
Quite amazing that anyone complained about the signing of Zman when he had a first class batting avearge of 37 and a bowling average of 29.
Even more amazing is that anyone wouldn't consider him a first choice for next season. He averaged 24 with the bat for Sussex and 30 with the ball with a strike rate of 60. To compare this like for like, Tredders averaged 43 with the ball with a strike rate of 83!!!
Lots of humble pie needs to be eaten when it comes to Zman!

Apart from his superb first class record! Absolutely ridiculous that he was written off so early

The thing with zaidi is his age, he's not nor was he ever a test player. He was a lucky lucky man to get a break at his age. Next year he's another year older,

Back on topic, mixed fortunes for our two players performing for Auckland in the Georgie Pie super smash bish bash bosh,T20 thingy. Craig Cachopa finished sixth in the averages for this tournament with 145 runs at 48.33 and a top score of 49 not out, whilst Luke Wright languishes much further down with 101 runs at 20.20 (appropriately enough) and a top score of 38. Luke doesn't seem to have bowled at all - does anyone know why? - whilst Cachopa bowled 3 overs for 18 runs. Auckland finished 3rd in the tournament.

Despite a flicker from Luke Wright (21 out of 29 for the first wicket) and a 37 in 32 balls for Craig Cachopa, Auckland fell 6 runs short of Wellington in the final of the Georgie Porgie something or other cup. Cachopa hit 79 not out in the semi-final and finished top of the averages for the tournament with 224 at 74.66 and a strike rate of over 150. Let's hope he can do the same next summer for Sussex.
Luke Wright now crosses the Tasman to play in the Australian T20 (still the Big Bash as far as I know) for Melbourne Stars.
