Well, I'm not sure what to make of Mill's post match interview. Does he want to move to a Club which has an established T20 team? We do have some good talent, which given the right support will come good. But T20 can be brutal and there are fine lines of individual success and failure. As much as Bopara is still a good player, he is a very poor captain. I thought he could have accelerated his innings better today. Our overseas selection, particularly Khan has been poor. I do think McAndrew adds something and he will run through brick walls for the Club. At the moment we are just not good enough. But I do think that Farbrace should have a pretty good idea what he needs to strengthen and how to do it; including the coaches. The "Ideally no" answer says it all. His attitude towards the younger lads is shocking and it shows in his body language if they misfield or make a mistake. The irony being Mills is rarely fit and is one of the worst fielders in the country. Get him gone. The reality is that seasons like the last 2 of T20 have been coming. You just can't keep on losing your best players and not properly replacing them. When I say properly I mean with experience and knowhow, not 18 year olds still learning the first class game let alone white ball skills. Luke Wright saw this a mile off, as per the link here from an interview pre finals day 2021. www.espncricinfo.com/story/vitality-t20-blast-2021-luke-wright-we-can-t-be-losing-our-best-players-all-the-time-1278341Salt: not been replaced, Orr could be the man but is still a few years off Wells: told he couldn't play white ball, now a big part of Lancs' team Evans: Closest possible replacement is Rawlins who is nowhere to be seen Wiese: Replaced by FHP, do me a favour Beer: Replaced by a 16 year old Briggs: Not replaced Jordan: Replaced by Finn who isn't a death bowler and doesn't bat. Make it make sense Rashid Khan: Replaced by Shadab Khan, and we'd probably be better off with Genghis Khan All of the players who have gone get into this current T20 side comfortably. You're going nowhere fast if you don't replace players of that quality. That's just the truth I'm afraid.

I draw some encouragement from being fairly competitive in a game like this with such a young and depleted team. I can picture Orr, Carter, Clark and Coles becoming the basis of a decent T20 batting force. If Ward could find the secret of sticking around a bit longer it would make a big difference.
We will definitely need to recruit in some experience though especially when Bopara and Mills depart. As we know, it’s hard to get that right and we’re not particularly attractive to join at the moment. I’m sure it’s why we jumped at the chance of playing Burgess but all that’s done is delay the development of Carter.
We particularly need more experience in the spin department. On paper, Shadab was a good fit but that’s another signing that hasn’t worked out. Can’t imagine he’ll be back. He’s the sort of player that might pop up elsewhere in future and play like a world beater though!

Losing Salt, Evans and Briggs has been the biggest problem. I'm less worried about Jordan (he never seemed to be available), Beer, Wiese, Rashid Khan and Wells, who were all good in their day. Further, Luke Wright, particularly opening with Salt, was as good as any county had; Luke is a big loss. Let's hope some of these youngsters keep improving and we make one or two astute signings. The spin option is important in T20 and we looked weak in that department again last night.

You're going nowhere fast if you don't replace players of that quality. That's just the truth I'm afraid. This is a really good post. Thought provoking. However, with the budget Sussex have and with what a squad max of 20-25? we unfortunately cannot afford to have too many contracted players that either play in one format or are only around a month or 2 during the season. Of that list of names only Briggs and Wells could play in all 3 formats and me around for the majority of the summer so we'd need to have contracts for the other 6 who would only play a handful of games. It's a decision the club have made to focus on the red ball stuff again with an emphasise on young talent, alot of this youngsters havent had much exposure to T20 cricket and should learn a lot from this campaign. Big issue for me is Ibrahim plays a game then left out so doesnt really develop any form and then Lenham is he still carrying that back injury? if not it seems ridiculous he isnt playing. Here's hoping Farbs finds 2 or 3 multi format players in the winter, also i think he may have a small overhaul of his backroom team.
