A lot of debate about cricket tends to follow assumptions, either that Test and Championship cricket is paramount, and that all our energies should go into supporting it and developing players for the red-ball game, or that the One day game, particularly Twenty20 is faster, more entertaining and as it is so lucrative, is the future of the game.
Against this background here is a totally unscientific poll, designed to give a little entertainment to members of the board in the time when we're waiting for the next England tour to start and the announcement of next season's fixture list. Just tell us whether your preference is for the red-ball or the white, or even if it makes no difference. The poll is open until midnight on Saturday 8 November. There have been some reports that mobiles do not always display polls on Proboards sites, so if you experience this, please try to log in from your home computer.

Only 15 votes so far out of a total membership of 235. If you're a cricket fan, there is no "don't know" option! In the words of Norwich's Delia Smith - "Where are you? Where are you? Let's be 'avin' you! Come on!"

It is a blight that beholds all cricket forums. The vast majority of Members lurk and neither post nor vote. Perhaps, they've been listening to Russell Brand!
Perhaps, we should create a weekly prize for the best post from a non-posting Member? First posting rites. It would have to be a prize that is accessed from the net and is therefore a link sent via email to the winner. Next question: Who would pay for it?
Ideas on a post...card, please.

Just a thought - maybe the thread title could be made slightly more specific eg "Do you prefer red ball cricket or the white ball variety?"
I'm just a bit flummoxed that we haven't had more response. Lurkers can't presumably vote, but members (if they have an interest in cricket!!) only have to click on a button. There's no need to compose a post!

It needs another option that says 'Don't mind as long as it isn't pink'.
I attended what to date remains the only pink ball trial in f/c cricket in England and it was truly horrible...championship cricket played at 9.30 at night in September? Even by the ECB's standards of contempt for spectators, that one took the biscuit.
Mind you, I have seen the pink ball trialled in second XI cricket (not under floodlights) and that was good. Definitely easier to see than the red ball for the spectator...
On polls, I'd say if we are going to conduct them, in order to attract a large number of votes they probably need to be less theoretical and more immediate and contentious - should Monty have been sacked; Murray Goodwin - saint or sinner; is KP a jerk; should people on free tickets and reciprocals be made to wear ebola protection suits and seated in their own area where they cannot pollute the rest of the ground? That sort of thing...

At Eaton Road, I understand, they have a very popular poll running for which the categories are, Should borderman be hanged, shot, or exiled to Australia? The latest voting figures I've seen suggest a strong bias in favour of clemency, with the first two options easily outstripping the third.

Are you sure you're not getting confused with the Parliamentary Labour Party's poll on what to do with Milliband? (By the way, did I ever tell you that the 17 years-old Millband once did two weeks work experience for me at Walworth Rd? Absolutely true. He was a sweet lad, very bright and willing and as we all knew his dad we nicknamed him 'Millibud'...but I fear I will get reprimanded for straying as off-topic as a Neil Kinnock speech...)

Clearly that should teach me for being so clever as to assume that people would think it was a witty allusion to wine choices. Fortunately our Moderator1 was alert to the possible confusion with his rolling news thread that spells it out .

The turnout wasn't impressive - 28 members voting out of 236 in all, and an average of 50 visiting the site each day - but its about the proportion that have elected Police and Crime Commissioners and we know what popular democratic successes those have been. And the results are fairly emphatic. 64% find red ball cricket the most satisfying form of the game
36% voted for both white and red, in different ways and moods
No-one thought that the white ball game alone satisfied
It is encouraging that both of our recent recruits have strong white ball games as well as the traditional skills, particularly Shahzad. It would be good to see them as representing a squad approach to the game that is capable of not only maintaining and improving on the last two seasons 3rd place Championship finishes, but also a return to the strong traditions of one day success. Now all we need is a top-class spinner....but that will have to wait for another day.
