Coming thick and fast. I would imagine Mills will come back for this one.

Essex win the toss and bowl. Mills in for Currie.

Disappointed we haven’t given Carter an opportunity in this one. Looks like opponents have developed a plan to open with a spinner against Ward. Hasn’t worked either last night or today though.

What a shame Hughes didn't get a deserved ton, pressure from Clark plodding along at the other end got to him there I think. Not a bad score but should have got 15-20 more.

Business as usual. Post an above par total and apply scoreboard pressure to the opposition.
Surprised given our three defeats have been when we were chasing that Essex decided to field on what appears to be a decent surface.
Another batting masterclass from Hughes, Alsop outstanding again, someone who still in my opinion is not always given the recognition he deserves.
Challenging start for Clark, I can't deny it does cause concern whe he chews up dot balls. However, he showed tremendous mental strength to come through that and the way he supported and complimented Hughes was first class.
Always seemed to be able to find a boundary when it was needed. A strike rate of just under 136 to finish was perfect. Perhaps he just needs a few deliveries to get in.
Hopefully, we can now finish the job with the ball.

Okay batting today. Some shockingly poor bowling.

207 is a good score, unfortunately 211 is slightly better. Can’t play the blame game just came up against a player who had his day out in the sun, well played Michael Pepper.

We do bowl a lot of filth at times, sometimes it goes unpunished but Pepper really cashed in there. For once I'll be critical of the captaincy and say Robinson should have bowled his final over a lot earlier, was obvious that getting Pepper would have won us the game.

He had to juggle too many underperforming bowlers today. Bar Mills and Robinson, they were all offering a couple of easy boundaries an over plus the odd extra. It was far too easy for Pepper and Allison. It wasn’t a freak innings by Pepper, he just efficiently dispatched a lot of gimmes. How many times did the final ball of the over go for a boundary, with the ball being delivered exactly where the batsman wanted it? Disclaimer: In the greater scheme of things they are of course well in credit etc

A bit of a reality check!!
Well played Michael Pepper, top innings.
Whilst not wishing to take anything away from him, after posting 207-2 and having them 90-5 at the start of the tenth over, I still couldn't see us losing. Even after they started hitting a few boundaries and gathering a bit of momentum.
Some odd bowling changes from Mills. Switching Coles to the Sea End with the shorter boundary, the obligatory Carson single over and leaving it in my opinion too late for Robinson's final over.
Whilst some may point at Clark's slow start with the bat, the bowling I felt was where the game was lost.
As mentioned in my post after the Hampshire win, Robinson and Mills aside, none of the other bowlers seem to be able to bowl to consistently restrict the scoring.
This profligacy was at some point going to prove costly as it did today.
The economy rates of Lamb, McAndrew, Carson and Hudson-Prentice are very concerning. Even Coles who has 15 wickets is going at almost eight and a half an over.
With the aforementioned you fear you are never far away from another boundary ball. Case in point being Lamb in the fifteenth over. The first two deliveries go for four runs (one of them being a misfield), three dot balls in a row bowling wide outside off stump and then almost on cue the last ball he puts in the slot for Pepper to duly dispatch for six. So frustrating!!
Second case in point, the McAndrew beamer!!
But then again that is the beauty of this side, we know they are still not the finished article with areas that still can be improved and upgraded. Despite all this, they have still delivered well beyond expectations.

On the plus side 2nd place is still completely within our hands even if Somerset win their game in hand tomorrow. Fingers crossed for Hampshire & Surrey wins tomorrow.

But I agree, they are well in credit and have delivered not just beyond expectations, but a long way beyond expectations. I (and I don't think I am alone) would have accepted a sixth place finish with half a dozen wins before the start of the competition and still took that as progress.

We have all said they have exceeded expectations. I’m guessing we all love this team. Even so, It’s ok to call out a lesser performance for what is and highlight some underlying shortcomings that may become issues at the business end of the competition . There’s a lot riding on Mills and Robinson. The others may take a few wickets but could well go for a few. to that end, I’d take a hit on the batting and give Currie a proper run. Either for Lamb or Carson. As you said earlier, we are a developing team. In that sense I don’t think it’s too bad we lost today. We will learn from it. Final point - great to see Clark getting some runs.

Here's one from left field. I look at how well Mason Crane is doing on loan at Glamorgan this season and have to question not only how did we miss that right under our nose, but how much would he add to this team? All wishful thinking and completely irrelevant, but as far as spinning options go in this competition we are so over reliant on Coles.
