It’s a painful watch, not helped by our more experienced players ballsing up. Something is happening though - we are slowly seeing which of the young players can thrive at this higher level. I thought Rogers would - and he still might - but he has looked out of his depth so far. Tear really looked like he had something about him, and he took his chance. That’s surely what the coaches want. Crocombe also looks like he can handle responsibility. If I was him I’d study Ollie Robinson and try to emulate him. Ibrahim’s stagnation is sad to see. He bowled better today but not sure he will take wickets. His batting comes across as confused. It doesn’t help that he’s not a natural fielder.

The one real positive for me in the three games to date is Henry Crocombe. I really didn't know what we were going to get. When I saw him 'live' last season you could see other than our overseas on the day, he was the one with genuine real pace. The downside was you were never far away from a loose delivery or a boundary ball. He seems to have eradicated that element from his game. He looks as though he is the one player in the group who could step up if required. I certainly would put him above Karvelas at present. I don't understand why he didn't open the bowling today. Tear showed a lot of promise. It will be interesting to see how he goes in the next few games. A real pity Lamb is injured, I believe he would have added something to the side in this competition.

Danny Lamb is no world beater but I think he would have pushed us over the line , if he’d been playing

I think weve seen very small improvements as each game has gone on. Ben Coad is a high quality performer and good exposure for people like Rogers who we cannot forget is still only 18 and i think there'll be a big score in him as this tournament progresses.
Avergae age yesterday was 22 and only player over 25. I think id plug away with this team now for the remaining 5 games.

I’m not a big fan of this strategy. Firstly I think you should always put out your best team to win a match, doing anything else is disrespecting the opposition and the competition. Secondly we’ve been through this scenario where we only play youngsters many many times in the recent past and all they learn is how to lose. They need the seasoned players around them.
When we lose all the games what will we have learnt? That a group of teenagers can’t beat a team of seasoned pros? We are basically sending them out into the lion’s den to see if any will survive. It’s the best way to break the confidence and will of any young player.

The difference back then is we didnt have a choice but ultimately the strategy put in place then has worked. I agree the strategy isnt entirely necessary but i dont think you aim accusation at the club for disrespecting a competiton thats already been relegated by the ECB. I like the fact young players are being asked to take responsibility to go out and win games of cricket for Sussex and if you really belive players do not learn from playing the best you are mistaken.

I beg to differ. The reason we’ve done well this year is because we’ve brought in the players we needed to balance the team. If we’d stuck with an all youngster side we’d still be losing. The credit goes to Farbrace.

Yes weve added a couple of old pros as we have done steadily through the Process (one for Jon ) but the fact remains 5 of those players in the win at Northants came through our academy. The strongest survive and the core is built around that. It makes absolute sense to try and 2 or 3 more from the system to subsidise our senior squad and or play a pivotal role in winning matches particularly with the ongoing threat of losing players to far more powerful counties. I get why you disagree with the strategy for this ODC because it isnt wholly necessary we are in a position where we can blend them in around senior pro's all im saying is if we are going to get beat even with the seniors we may as well blood a few more and see if we can find another James Coles who benefitted hugely from being exposed to 1st team cricket at a very young age.

I think we need a balance. Give our next generation players some opportunities but resting Simpson, FHP and Carson in the same game weakened us by too much. Will be interesting to see if that was a one-off or whether we’ll double down on playing a near second team from now on. Other counties that can’t qualify for the knockout stage will also be resting players so we still might be able to squeeze out a win or two.

In the other games there have been a fair few senior pros . Several of them didn’t really perform though . As for lions den - is it such a bad place for them to be after quite a lot of 2s cricket ? It’s a tough career . The weaker ones won’t make it . I think it’s great that Henry Rogers is possibly reflecting today on how hard he will have to work to make it at county level. Rather than being told he’s the next big thing
