Everyone knows we lack squad depth. We’ve got away with it this year because we’ve been lucky with injuries but we might not be so lucky next time plus we’re likely to be competing at a higher level. The ideal way to achieve that depth would be for players to step forward from the second team so it’s been a policy to give them plenty of opportunities in the 50 over competition.
The jury is surely now in on that. We have some cover in the spin department and maybe a seamer in reserve but there’s nobody pressing their case for promotion from the batting lineup. So we will need to recruit if we’re to compete in Div 1 and cover for a few possible injuries.
We will need at least 3 new players next season should we be promoted. The likes of Clark and Karvelas are not going to cut it in Div 1 and none of the back ups are making a case for a spot in the first team, as you say. We also have to hope that some of the more promising youngsters, such as Carter and Ibrahim, come good after what has been, so far, disappointing seasons for them.
