Some fascinating research on the Kent messageboard, analysing the busiest players in county cricket in 2014.
Sussex players seem to have had an extraordinarily light load compared to most, and on average enjoyed more time off than almost any other county squad.
The 'busiest' Sussex cricketer in 2014 was Ben Brown, who played 86 days. Several Surrey players played 93 days and several at Kent played 92 days. In total 38 county cricketers played more cricket than anyone on the Sussex staff, and Ben came 39th on the 'busy' list.
Joyce was the second highest placed Sussex player on the list, in a lowly 78th place with 74 days played.
Indeed, they were the only two Sussex players in the top 100 and the only Sussex players who played more than 70 days cricket during a season that lasted 178 days.
The reason seems to be that more than almost any other county, Sussex selects radically different sides in red and white ball cricket. The other 17 counties appear to have a much greater overlap of red and white ball personnel - a luxury that chairman and treasurer may wish to look at in future when setting the playing budget, particularly as it is a policy that has produced no white ball trophy since the 2009 double
Let's hope we don't hear any moaning in 2015 from coach and players about how tired and overworked the squad is feeling. The chances are that whoever our opponents are, they will be considerably more tired and overworked than the Sussex team!
For the record, the hardest working overseas players were Jeetan Patel and Hamish Marshall, both of whom played 89 days cricket.
