I too am optimistic, and if some of the stuff Davo and Luke talk about, translates into a brand of innovative cricket, we could be royally entertained

I know what howard is saying. There is a lot of 'management airspeak' in there - but then show me someone 'on the up' not only in cricket but in any walk of life in 2015 who hasn't been brainwashed into believing that in order to be taken seriously they have to spout meaningless 'airspeak', thus showing that management is not intuitive or even a case of common-sense thoughtfully applied, but is a scientific discipline filled with empirical rigour.
But at least Davis seems to have a degree of self-awareness and he isn't consumed with the hubris, moodiness and blinkered self-importance that derailed the last bloke.
The fact that he and Luke start together is very positive and means that the leadership can be far more collective than it was under the previous incumbent. There were credibly-sourced rumours that Wright only accepted the captaincy and turned down a higher salary and an immediate return to Div One with Surrey on the condition that he wouldn't have to work with Robinson.

"credibly sourced rumours" - sort of phrase you would go into one if it was your mate George. As far as I am aware your credibly sourced rumour is also totally untrue. Maybe you will have to prove otherwise, rather than spread the muck

When I was in the lobby at Westminster I reported stories every day with the phrase 'sources close to the government...'!
At least two of the regular contributors on here know the source and can corroborate its credibility.
But the important thing is that Robinson has gone and every indication is that there is a new and more constructive mood around the club, if not within the Inner Circle.

Davis does highlight all the aspects that need changing, even if it is waffle. I will be impressed by him if he remembers what he's highlighting now and produces the right answers. He'll need to trust our youth a lot more than Robbo did with this new policy on signings.
One thing though, as we're highlighting and changing, why is Hopkinson still fielding coach when, as stated, we've been so poor at that for three years or more? A change needed there too I think.

I'll give him a go, S and F, but has he not been in the exact same post for some time now?

I'll give him a go, S and F, but has he not been in the exact same post for some time now? Yes, there has been a lack of clarity in the recent coaching staff announcements. To kick off the reshuffle, first Robinson had to go (otherwise key players might have left)- and he accepts the Womens job pretty smartish. Sussex haven't lined up his replacement, so they immediately announce that Davis is being promoted to his existing job, cos he might have been tempted to go elsewhere. Then it all went quiet whilst the club looks for a new Director of Cricket (a job which Robinson thought was going to be his, after 18 months of discussions with Zac), and a batting coach (which Robinson thought was unnecessary). No mention of the status of Greenfield, Hopkinson or Lewis, although there seems to be an assumption that the latter two will remain in their current positions. It's confusing, partly because the club hasn't been able to explain or outline the new structure. Without the Director of Cricket in place, who is making decisions about the coaching structure? Will the DoC agree with what he inherits, or will he be told that it's not negotiable? Does anyone else know what's going on?

Howardh,
Let's offer Davis the benefit of the doubt and look at his past experience.
: He played under Peter Moores : Was 2nd XI coach for 5 years : Was also Assistant to Robinson for 10 years : Knows and works with Wright very well : The squad like him and understand 'his ways' : The things the Forum felt needed to be improved, Davis agrees and aims to achieve : As a CV for Sussex Coach this isn't too shabby
Fb,
I completely agree with you re: The Director of Sussex Cricket. That position is the piece that brings the whole jigsaw together. And why it is such an important position to fill and get right. Whether it is Keith Greenfield or someone else, all the initial decisions will have been made before he/she takes over. Their role will be for the future and not the present.

Will the DoC agree with what he inherits, or will he be told that it's not negotiable? Does anyone else know what's going on? I'm utterly confused. The facts have dribbled out in piecemeal and sometimes contradictory fashion. Someone who follows it all more closely than me can correct anything that I've got wrong but these are the ten 'facts' as I think we understand them:- 1. Toumasi and Robinson spend 18 months conducting a strategic review of the cricket structure. 2. A few months into that review, Robinson begins looking for an exit and applies for another job. He doesn't get it but several months later, he put himself back on the market and this time lands the job. 3. Toumasi says it is "well known" that if Robinson had stayed it would have been in a different job. Everyone assumes this means as director of cricket, although I'm not sure that has ever been spelt out? 4. Meanwhile,Luke Wright is offered the captaincy. He takes his time before accepting, reportedly weighing it against a better-paid offer from Surrey. Before he accepts he also reportedly seeks clarification, not unreasonably, about who he will be working with as Professional Cricket Manager, DoC, head coach or whatever the job titles are going to be after the Robinson/Toumasi 18 month strategic review. 5. Robinson fails to attend a key meeting and leaves Davis to answer members' questions about the playing side. When it is suggsted his absence might be connected to his application for another job, this is vehemently denied by the chairman (who subsequently admits he was in the dark that Robinson was looking for an exit). 6. Robinson's departure is announced to the surprise of nobody but the chairman and there is an immediate announcement that Davis is replacing him, although Sussex has not conducted any kind of application process. 7. On closer scrutiny it emerges that Davis has not replaced Robinson as Professional Cricket Manager and will keep the same job title he has had for several years. There is no announcement about what will happen to the post of Professional Cricket Manager. 8. Sussex advertises for a batting coach - a position which Robinson has maintained throughout the 18 month review is quite unecessary and, according to reports on this website, has incorrectly told a members meeting is a position that doesn't exist anywhere else in county cricket. 9. Comments from Davis and Toumasi seem to hint that Sussex is looking to recruit a director of cricket, a role that may have wider responsibilities for the women's game, the disabled game and recreational cricket. No job advert has yet appeared, although according to the ECB jobs in cricket website, Sussex are advertising not only for a batting coach but also a Cricket Development Officer, an Education and Employability Manager and a Welfare Officer as well as two sport science interns and two team analyst interns. 10. What happens next as the result of the protracted 18 month strategic review remains shrouded in mystery.

After his esteemed journo work surrounding Northants CCC, George Dobell is on a roll with a fascinating interview with the out-going head of the PCA, Angus Porter. Porter will be missed by both the players and the media. Always open, transparent (which got him into trouble a few times) and willing 'to chat' and offer a juicy quote or two, as a wave goodbye he leaves with some classic and thoughtful 'Porterisms'. On the English T20"Nothing is decided but I suspect we'll go, at least in the short term, to two divisions with promotion and relegation. But maybe in the longer term the employment model will become more flexible and players contracted to one county in the Championship could play for a different side in T20." Gambling the No.1 Major Concern"We try to educate and we have provided financial assistance upon occasions, but gamblers are very good at keeping their problem secretive. There is still a stigma when it comes to gambling..." On Match-Fixing"...I do worry that players will see what happened to Brendon McCullum in the witness box [during Chris Cairns' perjury trial] and think 'I wouldn't want to experience that'... we have to make sure whistle-blowers are protected and encouraged." Moving Forward "Should we be looking at four-day Tests and should we adopt the points method used in women's cricket where success in T20Is, ODIs and Tests is combined?" Final Curtain-Call"I'm not at all sure the game's business model is sustainable. Test cricket is struggling and there is too much meaningless, forgettable cricket. We have to breathe new life into the format or, long term, I'm not sure it can survive. It requires serious reinvention." www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/story/949873.html

A good list borderman, and just to add to your points 8 and 9 - and perhaps that in turn supports your comments on No 10 - the Batting and Second XI Coach Job Specification identifies that the successful candidate will be "... working with the Academy Director to ensure continuity within the player pathway" So would that Academy Director be Keith Greenfield, listed on the coaching page of the website as Cricket Performance Manager, or the new Director of Sussex Cricket (who may or may not be Keith Greenfield) or do any of these titles even matter since there is no consistency in applying them and they seem to be swapped around whenever it suits? Incidentally the coaching page has still not been updated and still shows Mark Robinson with all his details intact: perhaps they are preparing us for a Dallas type "it was all a dream" plotline, with Robinson strolling out of the shower on April 5th.

Sussex supporters have an exciting time during the next month with three very important announcements that will keep the club's media department on their toes.
1. The announcement of the O/S player for next season. 2. Who the new batting coach will be. 3. Who the new 'Director of Sussex Cricket' is. Meanwhile, supporters can follow Luke Wright's progress for the 'Melbourne Stars' in the Australian 'Big Bash' and Chris Jordan and his England tour of South Africa; while Tymal Mills and Danny Briggs stint for the England Lions against a Pakistan 'A' T20 side ends today.
