Not so tardy bowling from Danny.
Q: What happened to his nickname 'The Brigadier'? I see it's reverted back to the rather inane and unimaginative 'Briggsy'. Was it deemed too non-PC?

I would guess Gillespie and Andrews are not only two of highest profile people in county cricket but also among the highest paid. This together with not needed cost of Kieth Greenfield, no wonder we are told not getting an experienced batsmen.

herring,
To be fair, Rob Andrew took a huge pay cut from his previous Director of the RFU to become CEO of Sussex. Some suggest he was on between £200,000 and £250,000 and Sussex are paying him around £90,000. As for Gillespie, it is only a 7 month job, so this must reflect on his final annual wage packet.
I don't believe finances are the problem. The Club are not in debt and with a yearly £1.3m swanning its way come 2020, Sussex could easily get a loan if need be. In fact, I would suggest the Club could afford 4 top quality batsmen if they wanted to, so money isn't the issue. Perhaps, the reason is a determination to bring the Academy players through and offer them every opportunity at any cost - even if it means not being promoted next season.
A gamble indeed, but sometimes gambles pay off, although I, personally, do not see the logic when this gamble is not required.

Dizzy and Rob A now know exactly what players they need for 2019 season, which is good news, as they have to plan for Jofra being away on England duty for most of the season.. No excuses now.

Except, most players who might have done a job, will now be signed up elsewhere That’s why we end with players like Bruce

Regular readers may remember I wrote a piece about Surrey's golden media boy, Mark Church, and his incredibly ambitious charity run to raise money for research into pancreatic cancer after his father tragically died from this illness. unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/29587/threadActually our golden boy is doing rather well. In fact, he has raised almost £27,000 of the £30,000 set and apart from suffering an ordeal of physical complaints associated with running 1,000 miles broken down in to 200 separate runs, he has attracted various cricket journos, on occasions, to run alongside him and offer encouragement including the Telegraph's Nick Hoult, the BBCs Henry Moeran and our very own Bruce Talbot. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/200runsThankfully, 'Churchy' is almost at the finishing line tweeting yesterday, "With a bit of luck, lots of ice, a knee and ankle brace and your support I'll hopefully fall over the finishing line of #200runs on Tuesday at approx 16:30 at the Hobbs Gates ...be really lovely to share a mince pie with you." His gruelling adventure has not been all boring as along the route, various stars, have cheered him along including this former famous footballer who must epitomise the ultimate, "Look what's happened to..." and the perils of fame. Thank you to @paul_Gascoigne8 for getting me through Run 187

Sadly, this new T10 tournament hosted by the UAE is making a bit of a nonsense of cricket. Perhaps, this style of sport should be renamed Whackeroo or WhamBang? First, Johnny Bairstow smashes a new record by thrashing 84* from 24 balls. Unfortunately for him his record only lasted one day before Alex Hales thwacked 87 from 32 balls. Good to see the Brits making the running. So, who will be the first to hit 100? www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/46414413PS: At least the '100 Ball Tournament' has 30 more balls!!

Abidine Sakande is an interesting Sussex player summed up by the tweets below. Is he too clever for cricket or will he decide to choose another career like a growing number of hopefuls, if the bowling opportunities don't come his way, or even go the same way as Whittingham and join another county? Having watched him at Arundel last summer achieve 5-43 when a Sussex XI played a South Africa A side and utterly thrashed them, I was impressed. Not only does he have a sensible, wise and confident head on his shoulders, but Sakande has the intelligence to forge another and more lucrative career. Great to hear that a few students actually told me they'd learnt something from my talk! 😊🙌🏾 #achievingpeakpeformance

I am delighted Chris Gayle has been awarded $AU300,000 in compensation after winning his court case against Australian media magnate Fairfax. You may remember Gayle made a toe curling aside to journalist Mel McLaughlin during a live TV interview after a 2016 BBL match where, depending on your viewpoint, propositioned McLaughlin by suggesting a date and then saying, "Don't blush Baby" at her response. Even for Gayle this was an idiotic comment, but the 'Me Too Movement' went into overdrive, supported by the left-wing media, and a mountain, imho, was constructed out of a molehill. See the interview below. www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/81076789/chris-gayle-says-tv-interviewer-mel-mclaughlin-knew-he-was-joking-with-his-dont-blush-baby-lineThen a BBL team female massage therapist saw the interview and incensed by Gayle's comment contacted Fairfax Media claiming the West Indian had recently exposed himself to her in a dressing-room. Fairfax saw an opportunity to attract lots of publicity and therefore newspaper sales and went with this claim without, it now transpires, any actual proof. At the time, Gayle was pilloried for his alleged antiquated misogynist attitude which led to him being fined $AU10,000 by his BBL team, Melbourne Renegades. Meanwhile, Gayle has always pleaded his innocence re: the exposure claim. This week's court decision is another blow to the 'Me Too Movement' where, as in the recent US Brett Kavanaugh case, they believe 'You are guilty before proven innocent'. Gayle was supported by former Sussex player Dwayne Smith, hero of the 2009 T20 Trophy win, in the court room. Smith was in the dressing-room at the time when the massage therapist claimed the exposure. The outcome being she had lied all along. Gayle has a reputation for "liking the women" and being "a party animal" where rumours abound of his sexual prowess and four in a bed romps. He even plays on this entitling his recent book, "Six Machine". So, for the 'Me Too Movement', Gayle is an obvious target. No doubt the West Indian will use some of the money for a huge party to celebrate his court triumph whilst making sure he invites a bevy of young women. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/46424010

This is a blow for Leicestershire CCC as their highly-rated CEO, Wasim Khan MBE, departs after 4 years, to take up the Chief Exec job for Pakistan. An opportunity he can hardly turn down. While the county still languish in Division 2, Khan improved their finances and turned a collapsing cricket county into one that can now hold their head up high. Of course, Khan played for Sussex from 1998-2000, but he and Chris Adams never saw eye to eye and he left to join Derbyshire for the 2002 season and then a year later the Warwickshire Cricket Board, a county he had played for between 1992-97. Khan is seen as a growing light of the cricketing world and was voted as one of their most important men in English cricket (11th out of 50) in a recent magazine poll.

See that Lancs have signed the Aussie opening bat Joe Burns for next season.
The options for Sussex are disappearing very quickly.
Only hope that Dizzy and RA are on top of things ?

Yes, Burns was someone I championed for Sussex to sign last season The fact that he had played in England before, and wanted to return, plus he would have been available for the whole season Our lack of recruitment baffles me, especially as our obvious shortcomings remain from season to season
