Fb,
I am not in anyway denigrating or dismissing Capitalism. It is, perhaps, the best system we have from a fairly dour choice. As you say there will always be bad apples and there'll always be corruption, whatever form of politics is employed.

This is just a vanity project. Lords always has to be the best.

I agree with Flashblade, this is a vanity project, the need to be ahead of other developments at other Test Match grounds. Also, the Members financial approach is steeped in snobbishness when they turned down the property development to pay for the various refurbishments, however...
While Joe points out that each seat is costing £20,000 to build, which if correct seems an extraordinary large amount of money, Lord's is viewed as the 'Home of Cricket' and the greatest cricketing venue in the world. Next This year England hold the World Cup, where tickets for the Final at Lord's are being sold for between £95 and £395 each (!) Add on to that the extra revenues from the '100 Ball' between 2020 and 2024 + the usual Test Matches, NatWest T20 games and potential other competition Finals, so long as English cricket remains a successful sport, there is a possibility that Lord's could regain their £50m investment after 5 years when you add in the extra seat income like food, drink etc..

Well, the good news is that at long last the redevelopment of the Nursery End is to take place. The current Compton and Edrich Lower stands are frankly an absolutely dismal and depressing experience for watching cricket. However, am I the only one who is totally underwhelmed by the bland, unimaginative plans for this redevelopment. Not even a token roof structure.......seems like 50m only gets you a simple, functional stand (unless behind the scenes are lavish concourses and marbled toilets!). The contrast with the redevelopment of Australian grounds is stark......perhaps we needed ab Aussie firm to produce a more befitting iconic design, one that is in keeping with the heritage and prestige of Lord's. From my perspective the major obstacle is the massive Media Centre, far too large, underused and totally dominating the Nursery End. Personally, not a fan of this huge "spaceship" (cue awaiting incoming flak and list of design awards this structure has received). Only goes to prove that beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. Sadly, the images of the new development results in potentially the "best seats in the house" being wasted on either completely vacant spaces or by the largely empty "spaceship" structure. Great shame that we can't merely turn the clock back and start completely afresh. This would have enabled a stunning seamless Nursery End, incorporating a more appropriate modest sized media centre. Overall, would be quite realistic to achieve a 5,000 capacity increase (rather than the proposed 2,500). Compare and contrast with the really well designed Warner Stand. From my visit to Lord's last season, I can personally vouch for excellent viewing and facilities, plus modern features like translucent roof and impressive water conservation measures etc. Very impressed. Wicked Cricket.....financially, expresses surprise that that MCC members rejected the proposed offer from the property development company. Of course there remains another easy money raising option. Sell the naming rights to Lord's to some major company. Now that would have the "egg and bacon" blazers choking over their porridge and champers breakfasts.

See that Archer thrashed Gillespie in BBL this morning.

The Strikers are having a bit of mare of a BBL tournament this season. Lost 6, Won 4, lieing 6th in the table, they really need a spurt now to qualify for the next round. Khan remains consistent which is a good sign for this Summer, but no idea whether he can stay at Sussex for the whole tournament, especially if the Sharks qualify for the later T20 rounds.

See that Viljoen has left Derby, could he be the answer for a new fast bowler .
England’s performance in Barbados, shows they lack a genuine fast bowler, although the team selection did not help.
Looks even more certain Archer will be called up for all the test matches this summer,

Parish NoticesHere we are in the depths of Winter and the primary piece of Blighty cricketing news is that the Windies are humiliating England. Add to that the political turmoil and it's heads down for the end of March where to watch friendlies at Hove, we'll be all wrapped up in Nanook clothing. So, where's the positive news? Rob Andrew this week was quoted: "We’re very proud of the work we’ve done to make Hove a venue supporters associate with women’s cricket." So, Sussex CCC should be. For a small ground that will never ever compete with the BIG boys, finding a niche market like Women's cricket is the way forward and the Club have achieved this with aplomb. More Internationals and Finals matches this season at Hove and with growing crowds, what is there not to like? Local legend Mike Charman is retiring after 15 years of scoring for Sussex CCC. It is rare for a humble scorer to gain such recognition, but he is well liked and respected by both Club and supporters. At the 6s Cup Finals Day in 2017, players were telling me that a major attraction to reach the Finals at Hove was the knowledge that Charman was scoring their games. sussexcricket.co.uk/news/mike-charman-step-down-first-team-scorer-after-15-years-roleAnother legend but at an international level was sports writer Hugh McIlvanney. Sadly, he died this week at the age of 84 years-old. Few have reached his heights of writing and astute insight. Only Michael Atherton comes close. McIlvanney's specialist areas were boxing and football in the days when social media was not even a glint in the globalists' armoury. Often described as "a genius and a legend" many years writing for the Scotsman, then the Daily Express and finally the Sunday Times, he showed how the true and noble essence of journalism should shine, rather than today's embarrassing gutter press and fake news. An interesting footnote. Did you know his brother, William, was a successful crime novelist? Meanwhile, the Sussex lads have started their pre-season training with lots of nets, gym work and running. Those, of course, who are not participating in the various overseas T20 tournaments or like Luke Wells, playing for an Australian Club. Q: Has there been any sign of van Zyl back at Hove, yet? Supporters and Club will be watching every fall in the field, every run between the wickets, every knock on the pad, to see how Stiaan's knee holds up. This could become a soap drama in itself. The Sussex 2nd XI fixtures list came out this week. Here it is: sussexcricket.co.uk/news/second-xi-fixtures-confirmedFinally, the Sussex player of the week is, not surprisingly, Laurie Evans, who smashed a blistering T20 maiden century in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). After a few low scores for Rajshahi Kings - including in their 25-run defeat to Khulna Titans last week – Laurie roared back with 104 from just 62 balls to set up a 38-run win against Comilla Victorians in Dhaka. Class always shines through.
