Sussex have been my team throughout life, but Somerset are a close second. Lovely ground, supporters, location, great sides over the years, well managed, well financed, competitive and now this. Whoa! What an off-field signing for the Club. This should keep 'em in Division 1 for a few more years. Lots of respect for Gordon Hollins. He managed to keep county cricket alive during the last 10 very difficult financial years and put his foot down to keep 18 counties. While, he was an instigator and pioneer for pushing an EPL, not sure what he must have thought about his dream transforming in to The 100. Possibly, why he left the ECB and is now heading for Taunton? PS: It is hilarious to know that the former Somerset CEO left because the club's profit for last year was not as high as it should have been. If only Sussex could make a profit... any profit... anything at all. Profit targets were understood to stand at £600,000 (before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization), but they have confirmed they failed "to operate within the club's financial budgets". The club's EBITDA actually stood at a shave under previous estimations, at £593,861. That figure drops to £231,795 as the comprehensive income for the year ending September 30, 2019. Despite international cricket returning to the west country, that number is down on the 2017-18 income of £278,883.

There has been much excitement over the years about the potential of the USA embracing cricket and turning this sport into a major Countrywide event. Unfortunately, defeats like this are really not helping the cause. It looks like we should sign up the more resilient Xavier Marshall although Karan KC must be feeling that he missed the chance to improve his career bowling average.

Fake Lord's cricket card: Bournemouth's James Lattimer faces jail
Does anyone know this James Lattimer? Is he a scoundrel and a scallywag or a Gentleman chancer? He did buy a ticket at the gate and only used this fake card to get him in to the exclusive Lord's members-only area. Worse still, he bought the original card on Ebay which must send our MCC antediluvian fusties into a tizzy. Perhaps, it's because Lattimer is involved in the cleaning business rather than the military? Sadly, "faking it" is all the rage where fake IDs have always been at the top of the adventitious charms.
District Judge Samuel Mark Goozee told Lattimer at the Westminster Magistrate's Court this week, "I consider my powers are not sufficient for sentence." Wow! This is a serious offence given there is a 29 year waiting list to enter the much hallowed £1,000, nod and a wink, members-only section and the Judge after 25 years is, perhaps, still awaiting for his.
But Prison? Surely not! Lattimer is due to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court at a later date.

Impressive! 69 teams have signed up for the 2020 Sussex Slam and 70 for the Surrey Slam. This Slam is smashing it and will go smacking around the country at this rate. What a boom, bang and burst! Q: Will the winners of the Sussex Slam then play the victors of the Surrey Slam to become the slamming champion of champions? sussexcricket.co.uk/news/69-teams-sign-sussex-slam-players-still-welcome

The world-wide T20 tournaments love their hard-hitting names and now the Indian IPL is referred to as the VIVO IPL. Who the hell are VIVO, you may ask? VIVO are a leading Indian mobile phone manufacturer. No idea how much the Company paid for this title sponsorship, but it's a good cell! It kinda makes The 100 a rather boring name. No doubt a major insurance company or bank will come knocking and the new competition will be known as The HSBC Hundred, for you can't beat a good alliteration. Meanwhile, not to be outdone by BT Sport and their successful coverage of the Australian BBL, SKY Sports have muscled in and signed a new three-year-deal to cover the VIVO. www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/11932371/ipl-returns-to-sky-sports-in-2020-as-part-of-a-three-year-contract

Little rain and plenty of South African sunshine. What isn't there to like?

I can see a lot of marketing fun with this Sussex Slam team. How about Join the Shoreham Swingers and 'get hit for 6' or 'bowl a maiden over' or 'watch 11 play under the covers'... Hmm, better stop there.

A superb feature article about John Snow by James Mettyear in the Cricinfo off-shoot publication The Cricket Monthly. If you're a Sussex supporter and love your cricket what a romantic Valentine's Day gift. Snowy doesn't like being interviewed and from all accounts has never enjoyed the process. After my own humble attempts to unsuccessfully persuade him some six years ago, I realised history for him remains in the cricket books, whence it shall never dare to presently speak and why everything you ever read about our infamous former fast bowler is retrospective. Not even a Sussex CCC Board Member telling Snow he would give £200 to his favoured charity if he agreed to converse with me was sufficient for Snowy to change his mind. Anyway, Mettyear writes in fine glowing and nostalgic prose; he remains a true superfan, when a month before England won the football World cup was smitten by Snow's awesome on-field presence and panache. www.thecricketmonthly.com/story/1134499/for-the-love-of-snow

Sussex CCC players are in the public eye on Valentine's Day. Now it's the turn of Chris Jordan.

Chris Jordan is similar to Laurie Evans in that once they signed for Sussex CCC their careers took off. Jordan was a 'wash out' at Surrey. The Oval was experiencing upheavals and no-one had noticed the West Indian's potential. Thanks to the then Coach of Surrey, Chris Adams, combined with a whisper from former Surrey boy, RHB, now ensconced at Hove, who DID see Chris's abilities, Jordan was allowed to go by Adams and moved South. He never looked back. Lucky ol' England and Sussex .

It's looking very likely that all the T20 Blast home matches will be a sell-out this season, so booking in advance could be a sensible step.

The Sussex Cricket Society (SCS) has a fascinating talk coming up on March 3rd in the Long Room given by former County cricketer and later 1st class umpire David Millns. When playing for Leicestershire, he is one of only a few players in modern times to score a century and take ten wickets in the same county championship match (v Essex 1996). David was the leading wicket taker in 1994 with many cricket writers believing he should have gone to Australia for the 1994/95 Ashes tour. His best all round season came in 1996 and again many journalists picked him for the winter tour to the West Indies. After retiring, in 2007 Millns was selected to the reserve list as a first class umpire by the ECB. The following year he was promoted to the main list. Later, Millns stood as an umpire in the 2014–16 ICC Women's Championship and three years later was selected as one of the two foreign umpires for the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_MillnsThe talk starts at 7.30pm. Anyone interested who is not a member of the SCS should either email: sussexcricketsociety@yahoo.co.uk or contact Chris Scovell at 01798 875597.

The vibrant, exciting and new T20 competition for our county cricket clubs, the Sussex Slam, is taking shape. What do we know so far? The tournament begins in May and the 69 clubs who have entered are placed in regional tables which are then subdivided into smaller sections (4 teams). Each side then plays each other twice, home and away, and presumably the winner of this table then goes on to compete with the winner from another and so on. Click on this link to find out who your local club is initially playing. twitter.com/sussexslam?lang=enHere is the overall picture. Interestingly, Surrey are the pioneers having created this tournament for their cricket clubs some years ago.
