Huge plaudits to Sussex CCC for their BIG 175. It was a day to remember.
A lot of hard work had been injected into the celebration by the club staff and hierarchy from organising the vintage car
display and the highlight of the day - the tea interval drive of the cars around the ground - to the special celebratory lunch
in the 'Boundary Rooms', the excellent museum exhibits and the Angmering women’s stoolball exhibition along with the
cutting of the anniversary cake.
One man in particular, club director Bob Warren, should be singled out for individual praise.
The downside was where were all the people to share such an important day in the history of Sussex CCC? Agreed, just
over 2,000 attended which was the largest single day Championship crowd of this season, BUT...
: Admission was just £1.75.
: This was a Sunday.
: Around 12 present and former internationals were playing including Matt Prior.
: It "was" the club’s 175th anniversary.
: A glorious warm sunny day.
: A beer festival + other displays and exhibitions.
: The match was well advertised and marketed.
What can Sussex CCC do to attract more people to a Championship game? On a cold, dank Friday T20 May evening - an
event which lasted around 3 hours - more than double that number attended the Surrey match.
Question: Are there enough people in the county of Sussex who are sufficiently interested in watching Championship
cricket? That it doesn’t matter how much money is thrown at the marketing and advertising, unless the public are
frogmarched through the gates, they simply won’t turn up?
The club are drawing down £450,000 of the ECB £1m fund this year to use on increasing and improving the
marketing of cricket at Hove. Near on 2 months into this season, there is little sign, yet, of a return.
Perhaps, as the adage goes, "Only time will tell."
