Six strong shortlist announced today for the British Sports Journalism Awards:-
Mike Atherton, The Times; Scyld Berry, Telegraph; Nick Hoult, Telegraph; Jarrod Kimber, ESPN Cricinfo; Paul Newman, Daily Mail / Mail on Sunday; Vic Marks, Guardian.
For me it's between Kimber for his stylish, cultured prose and Hoult for an impressive list of exclusive stories (although the leaks and plants are likely to dry up up now that Squire Giles - who shamelesly used him as his personal kite-flyer - has been sidelined).
Promising cricinfo tyro Tim Wigmore is shortlisted for young cricket writer of the year. I've also been enjoying his writing on politics for the New Statesman - a magazine in which I had a weekly political column back in 1995/96. I then recklessly buggered off to Australia for three months to watch and play cricket and when I got back my column had been given to Steve Richards. Which rather served me right for being such a dilettante. But I can't say I regret it!
