Completely agree flashblade. But consider that an Englishman playing the IPL has to compensate the ECB and/or his county for taking part then that inflates their asking price.
Perhaps players should take the view that you can't put a price on experience and thus say that they would be prepared to play for much less. One way or other, the vicious circle has to be broken.

You're right, irishexile. And isn't that just another example of how our structure inhibits our players' T20 experience?

If a player contracted to a FCC has to compensate the county for the time he is missing to earn money at IPL/elsewhere that has to be right
I would not expect to earn a salary but not turn up at work, earn more money elsewhere and be expected to be paid by my original employee!

Absolutely right, Jim. But doesn't the overlap of the county season with the IPL make it more difficult for an English player to participate in the IPL?

For how long has county cricket been a part of the English summer (well Apr-Sep anyway)? And wasn't it the IPL that decided it should be run to clash with the English cricket season?

You're right, chrisc. But I think the attitude that "we were here first, so we're not shifting" has become self-defeating. The IPL has shifted the balance of global power well away from Lords. If we don't adjust to the reality of the global tournaments, we'll continue to decline, IMO.
