"Members and supporters of Sussex County Cricket Club will have a new match-day offering to look forward to at the start of the new season after the club signed a new three-year deal with HEINEKEN. The three-year supply agreement means HEINEKEN UK will be the exclusive supplier to the club of draught and packaged lager and cider as well as Sussex’s competition sponsor of the NatWest T20 Blast tournament." www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/around-the-ground-sussex-team-up-with-heinekenAs a lager drinker, I am dismayed (polite word) by this news. No Stella? No Kronenbourg? I am seriously disappointed (another polite word). Did the club just take the highest bid, with no regard to the taste buds and preferences of their valued customers? Do they think lager drinkers are so uncritical that they will drink whatever is put in front of them? Rant over - but the sentiments remain.

fb, This sums up my concerns which I wrote about in the 'Wicked Cricket' blog yesterday. Where is the line drawn between gaining sponsorship and other off-field commercial revenue and the wishes of Members/Supporters? Will we soon have an exclusive food deal with 'McDonalds'? Surely, a balance must be found? Zac has been asked by the club to increase off-field revenue and this is the easiest and most successful way of doing it. Gaining an individual sponsor for the T20 tournament is brilliant but this comes at a price. Kronenbourg and Peroni are my favourite lagers but Fosters and Amstel it will have to be. If this heart-break allows Sussex to afford another T20 O/S mercenary for the season, I will accept that sacrifice.

As a matter of principle, is the club prepared to lower the standard of its food and drink offerings, if that results in increased income? Yet again, we're back to Mr Wilde's observation about the man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

As someone wisely said to me last night: "What sort of brewery has to pay people to drink it's beer?"

The chilling line is at the bottom of that article
"Sussex will also be announcing their new ale partners for the 2015 season in due course."

The chilling line is at the bottom of that article "Sussex will also be announcing their new ale partners for the 2015 season in due course." In deference to their members and supporters, I firmly believe the club will make their choice based on the quality of the ales available. There is no way they will sacrifice the quality in response to the highest bidder. I'm not an ale drinker, but look forward to hearing some reassuring comments from you experts once the club makes its announcement.

"New ale partners"?
Sussex supporters will put up with an awful lot, on and off the field. But any interference with our pints of Harvey's will surely lead to a revolt the likes of which the club hasn't seen since 1997!

It is even more important than that
