No Finch, Maxwell, Faulkner or Cummins but Ahmed, Shaun Marsh, Nevill and Voges are included. Nevill's selection as Haddin's understudy is well deserved after averaging over 70 for NSW this season. Voges is also selected after a strong showing in the Sheffield Shield. Eight wickets in the final of the Sheffield Shield got him the nod over the unlucky Steven O'Keefe who I would have selected instead as backup spinner to Nathan Lyon. Having two spinners who can't bat isn't ideal. O'Keefe is three years younger than Ahmed and has a batting average of 29 and a bowling of 25. www.cricketnsw.com.au/news/news-archive/2015/3/31/strong-shield-season-books-nevill-a-spot-in-australia-test-squad On a separate note the following nine New South Wales players have been awarded central contracts for 2015/16: Michael Clarke Pat Cummins Brad Haddin Josh Hazlewood Nathan Lyon Mitchell Starc Steve Smith David Warner Shane Watson. The full list is: Cricket Australia contracted players George Bailey, Michael Clarke , Patrick Cummins, Aaron Finch, James Faulkner, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, Chris Rogers, Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith, David Warner, Shane Watson. The biggest omission is probably Peter Siddle who despite this has been selected for the Ashes.

For the benefit of those who are confused by coverpoint's post about who has or has not been selected, this is the Test squad for the Ashes and the 2 Test series in the West Indies beforehand: Michael Clarke (capt) Steven Smith (vice-capt) Fawad Ahmed Brad Haddin Josh Hazlewood Ryan Harris (Ashes only) Mitchell Johnson Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh Shaun Marsh Peter Nevill Chris Rogers Peter Siddle Mitchell Starc Adam Voges David Warner Shane Watson www.espncricinfo.com/australia/content/story/857475.htmlAnd to put in perspective, here are the fixtures they will be playing: www.espncricinfo.com/australia/content/team/2.html?template=fixturesOn the warm-up leg against West Indies they will play a three-day match before the 2 Tests, then in England there are 2 4-day games and 2 3-day games (I hesitate to call them first-class because of the contortions both Tourists and the counties seem to go through in treating as outdoor nets something that the spectator on the gate pays a lot of money to see), before a T20 international and 5 50-over games. So fringe players - Fawad, Nevill, Voges, at least one player named Marsh - will have plenty of practice. The fast bowling should be interesting, with Johnson, Harris,Siddle, Starc, Hazlewood all jostling for position. Given the volume of batsmen who bowl seam-up medium pace in the squad it is probable that only 3 of these will play together.

The selection of Voges is a disaster for Middx, who recruited him not only as overseas player but captain for 2015 in place of Rogers, whom they expected to lose to the Ashes squad.
I said on here last December that I thought it was foolish because Voges was scoring hundreds for fun in the Sheffield Shield and he would make the Ashes party, too.
Not very clever by Gus Fraser, who seems as clueless at picking the Aussie team as he is at selecting the England side!

If nobody else has done so, Sussex should now sign Faulkner as the second overseas player for the T20. Better choice than Bailey, whom it was reported we were in talks with...

Bm,
Whole-heartedly agree.
The strong rumour about Bailey seems to have dissipated. Have contract dealings hit a snag? If so, Faulkner is the ideal choice, although I'm sure, there will be a CC fight to get him.
Rumours abound there are still a lot of Ashes tickets sloshing around. Due to the expected humiliation ticket days 4 and 5 may be hard to sell in advance. But if a certain KP returns I'm sure that would instil further interest.

Presumably Faulkner and Bailey will make the squad for the ODIs/T20.

Presumably Faulkner and Bailey will make the squad for the ODIs/T20. Which don't start until Aug 31, two days after the T20 Blast final, so you would imagine that Cricket Australia would see considerable advantage in having them already in England playing county white ball cricket, tuned up and ready to go at someone else's expense!
