Was the feeling among the Hants members/supporters around you one of relief that the follow-on was not enforced and that they had been handed the only get-out-of-jail card in the pack?
Because I agree with you: if Joyce doesn't put the opposition back in after an innings that has been done and dusted in just 50 overs and the bowlers have had the bonus of an overnight rest, then the 150 run follow-on margin might as well not exist, because Sussex will always opt to bat again. I got there just as Sussex came out to bat, I sat in the you know who stand (I still can't believe they named a stand after him) near the members area. There was a lot of talk about Sussex batting again, most seemed to think Sussex had made the wrong decision. If we do win I would say it's a match that could be used as an ideal case scenario on "How not to win a cricket match". I don't think that a win will fully vindicate the decision not to put them back in, as the confidence among the Hants players must have been boosted immensely the moment Joyce (or whoever) let them off the hook. Imagine the players grouped together, awaiting Adams and Carberry at the wicket, Magoffin ball in hand tossing it menacingly, Mills rubbing his hands together, cracking his knuckles, we had a chance to really intimidate them into submission and we wasted it completely. Spot on, pompeymeowth. It's the difference between an aggressive 'we're gonna win' attitude, and a passive 'scared of losing' approach.

Hopefully they'll get themselves fired up today and do it for Nasher. I forgot to mention him, he looked pretty sore coming off the field, it took him and the physio about 5 minutes to get back to the dressing room.

Great stuff - was it a dodgy umpire decision given Smith's reluctance to walk? Hobden gets another wicket. His time in South Africa over the winter has done him a world of good.
Hampshire 182-5
Ervine the danger man.

Thank you 'Potential England Performance Programme'. Thank you very much. Hobden bowls Wheater. 191-6. We have a worthy replacement for Jimmy Anyon, no probs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjnkmNyArNg

Yes, the PEPP coaching over the winter seems to have done Hobden a world of good - and others, too, as his fellow PEPP graduates Lewis Gregory and Craig Miles took five-fors and six-fors in their first LVCC matches of the season.
I was also impressed that Robinson gave full credit to the programme, which is run by Kevin Shine and Neil Kileen, and didn't claim Hobden's advance as all his own work!
It's almost as if we have acquired not just two but three genuinely quick new bowlers over the winter - Shahzad, Mills and Hobden.
At 204-6 with the last two real batsmen at the wicket and only the three bowlers to come we should be fine. Thanks Ed for making the game so much more 'interesting' than it otherwise might have been !!!

And all over by lunch. O ye of little faith! Well done to the lads on a fine first performance and to Mark Robinson for reading the conditions so well. No need to gloat (ha!ha!), onwards and upwards. See you all on Sunday.

This topsy-turvey match, full of surprises, ended on form with Luke Wells taking two of the last three wickets. Well done Sussex. The team rarely allow supporters an easy ride and enjoy keeping us on our toes! Ho-hum for another roller coaster season. At least, I have my 'Kwells' at the ready. Onwards to Worcestershire who given their recent tawdry collapse against Yorkshire are ready to be fleeced. PS: Lots of positives and great performances to be taken away from the match but for me the ascendancy of Hobden offers huge promise for the future. I am delighted for his Mum who attended all four days. The present county table: Sussex are 2= alongside Yorkshire with Durham one point ahead. www.espncricinfo.com/county-championship-div1-2015/engine/series/803387.html?view=pointstableThe "boys" are merrily tweeting away. Tymal Mills @tmills15 ยท No better feeling than winning a 4 day game! Awesome effort from all the boys #GOSBTS Jon Lewis @jonlew800 Great win @sussexccc and well bowled my boys, @magsy64 @tmills15 @hobs19 @ajshahzad Match winners! 20 wickets! Next game now!
Luke Wright @lukewright204 Great win! Nothing better than winning beers! @craigcachopa @ben_Brown26 #GOSBTS
Meanwhile, Ben Brown returned to his hotel room on Monday evening to discover this. "One of the great room mates! Thank you @craigcachopa what a treat to come back to!"

Anyone have any idea who is going to open to cover for Nash? Will they just move Yardy or Joyce up and bring Machan in the middle-order? Can Machan or Finch open?

Anyone have any idea who is going to open to cover for Nash? Will they just move Yardy or Joyce up and bring Machan in the middle-order? Can Machan or Finch open? There are a number of options, some discussed in this thread unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/8435/thread about the current 2ndXI match where Machan and Finch have opened and Zaidi has batted well. Last year Joyce batted very well when opening as cover for Nash when he was recovering from his appendix operation. Yardy wouldn't be a favourite: two cheap dismissals in this match to add to Wells doesn't argue for a strong partnership and that is what we desperately need. Machan might be the answer or we could introduce Zaidi at 6, with fingers crossed that his batting of last September rather than April- June can be reproduced, and have Joyce opening.
