I see Loughborough have scored 400 against a full strength Kent side, is that a first for a Uni against county opposition? Yes, I'd like to know the answer to that one! And now the students have cheekily declared with a first innings lead. I can't believe that has happened very often, either!

And now Wood is gone , this is probably time to pepper Briggs with our two fastest bowlers. But instead we're having to bowl Nash at him while we try to get the over rate up!
on edit: The problem with Mills is that he is so erratic that his bowling figures don't actually tell you how expensive he is. For example, he's just bowled a nine run over , only two of which were off the bat.

To call Mills a rough diamond is probably kind to the rough, whereas Shahzad has been mightily impressive. As Bm points out Mills gives opponents more byes than a bowl of cheerios cereal which is extremely unfair to Brown. One only hopes Robinson can weave his magic wand.
Having said that figures of 2 for 28 sounds impressive but when you add all the general byes...(Hampshire 15 off 142 overs: Sussex 23 off 48), Mills generous contribution puts his tally a little more into perspective. Even so, huge potential and a huge heart which augurs well for the future.

Disagree, Borderman. No one can expect a perfect performance in the first CC game of the season. 444 with Ben Brown's splendid century and Luke Wright's excellent knock, well supported by important innings from Shazhad and Magoffin, having been 23-3, (shades of England) should be cause for celebration. The fact that Hampshire are 9 down should also spark our praise. Please do not be over-critical of what has been a highly promising two days from the lads. Ask any professional cricketer and not one of them would expect to win every hour of the 24 in a CC match.

A good end to the day, is it worth putting them back in or should we put it beyond doubt?

Disagree, Borderman. No one can expect a perfect performance in the first CC game of the season. Can you tell me what you are disagreeing with, howard? Because I don't dispute anything you have said. What was it that I said you take such issue with? I'm not being provocative (for once) ; I'm genuinely baffled at what you are objecting to... My only criticisms (from afar I confess) on an admirable Sussex performance today are (i) carelessness in missing an extra batting point by seven runs (ii) the tardy over rate, which led to us having to bowl Nash at an inappropriate moment when we should have been battering the tail-enders with pace. And the concerns over Mills' profligacy (expressed in far more exasperated terms by Essex supporters during his time at Chelmsford) is merely a statement ot the bleedin' obvious, isn't it?

I do not understand the criticism of Nash by those not seeing the action. Yes, I am sure part of the reason he was brought on was the minus 2 over rate and yes, Ervine decided to try and knock him out of the ground first over but I certainly felt from over 2 onwards he bowled very well beating the bat half a dozen times with no supporting luck.

Teams fight back don't they, just like we did from 30-3. It happens all the time and it would be boring if it didn't. We are battering them but there's still a moan and a groan - that's my interpretation of Howard's post anyway. And Nash was a threat by the sounds of it too, not just a time skirter.
Brilliant work, bowl again I reckon. A night's rest in the bank and they only bowled 50 odd overs anyhow. I said Brown might need to do well if Prior's about - I'll accept 50% of the credit for his knock for simply stating the obvious.

Thank you, Fraudster. You are spot on. One does get a little fed up of only reading one slanted interpretation of "the bleedin' obvious"! Churlish.

Interesting that we are batting again, especially as we don't have a spinner for the fourth innings. I guess a quick 180 or so leaving them 400 in 4 sessions is the plan.

28 for 2 - and now we're under pressure. Why didn't Ed enforce the follow on and keep Hants under pressure?

244 - 2 effectively is not the worst position to be in!!
Still plenty of time to put them under serious pressure and the weather is set to stay good.
Let's hope so anyway.

I agree, stevec - but I'd have preferred to keep the pressure up on Hants! We've got to bowl them out again so why not get on with it?

I refuse to get despondent during the first match of the season!!
I'm sure the skipper has a very good game plan.
