I totally agree with that, Joyce is more of a No 3 than Moo (much as I love him) will ever be. On paper we should score 400+ every match!

Well done, Ben Brown - a century in his first CC innings. This may cushion the prospective blow of losing Matt Prior.

Hampshire 58-4 - Brilliant stuff. This match just gets better and better for Sussex. edit: Now 63-5 at tea. WOW! This match could be all over tomorrow.

Very pleased for Matt Hobden. The recruitment of Mills and Shahzad must have left him wondering if he has a future at Sussex at all.
But with Anyon and Hatchett injured and Jordan in the Caribbean, our seventh choice seamer has seized his chance well. I hope he keeps it up and makes it impossible for Anyon or Hatchett to replace him when they return to fitness.

It really does look a very strong squad and there should be, fingers crossed against any further injuries, capability to streamline players for white-ball or red-ball cricket. Now for a defiant fightback by James Vince to make his case for a place in England's middle order!

Modestly, Robinson is not claiming credit for Hobden's evident advance , but attributing it to Kevin Shine and Neil Killeen who had him in the PEPP scheme over the winter, at both Loughborough and in South Africa.
Another of the six young quicks in the scheme, Craig Miles, took 6-63 for Glos v Northants yesterday. Yet another of them, Ollie Stone, has so far taken two for Northants in the Glos innings and another of them, Lewis Gregory has today taken five wkts for Somerset v Durham.
It seems we do have English coaches who know how to nurture young fast bowlers, so I'm not sure why we needed portly Dave Saker, who appeared to specialise in ruining them!

Mills lack of control seems to have allowed Wood and Ervine to get away a bit. At 95-7 you want to turn the screw, not spray it about all over the place. Perhaps Mills needs sending off to the Shine/Killeen coaching school...

Perhaps Mills needs sending off to the Shine/Killeen coaching school... We've done this a few times before. When faced with a wounded animal, Sussex start to ease off instead of going for the jugular. I'm sure it's not as simple as that, but that's how it looks.

Far to many four balls. No doubt Joyce is setting attacking fields; but since losing the seventh wkt, Hants have been scoring at five and a half an over!

Both Hobden and Mills will go for a few, especially when you get a determined tail-ender with a good eye - and also nothing to lose, since the innings was such a write-off early on. I wouldn't be too severe on either of them from running in and bowling as fast as they can. In other circumstances that approach will bring wickets - if not for them, but for the more experienced, canny bowler at the other end. What we do lack is a bowler to exercise a little control, other than Magoffin. On edit: And as I write we bring Nash on and he goes for a couple of fours!

And even Magoffin has just gone for 11 in an over.
The only reason Nash is bowling, by the way, is because we are way behind the over rate and in danger of being docked a point. As I think someone predicted in this thread before the match started!

I think we will see this a lot from Hobden and Mills They have obviously been encouraged to run in and bowl fast, and if they go for a few, so be it

I see Loughborough have scored 400 against a full strength Kent side, is that a first for a Uni against county opposition?

But it's all about the tactical use of bowlers who leak runs but are potential wicket-takers. We've had this before with Anyon, of course. At 95-7, you could argue that's the best time to unleash the untamed tear-away quicks because you've got runs in the bank. Equally you could argue it's the time to tighten the garotte around the opposition's neck and strangle them to death! Currentlyy this pair have got Hants out of jail by putting on 106 runs in 18 overs and we're having to bowl Nash, who is being milked at five an over, beacuse we've bowled too slowly.
