Pretty much an unchanged side for this one I should imagine. Maybe Mills for Hobden, if he's fit and Robbo wants to rotate our two speedsters. I'd like to see Wells come back in down the order, perhaps at six, and bowl a few more overs. Wouldn't be unhappy if Finch kept his place though as, although he might not have scored many runs, he did bat with great resolve during a testing period. So my team for this match would be.....
Nash Joyce Machan Cachopa Wright Finch/Wells Brown Robinson Shahzad Magoffin Mills/Hobden

I would say Cachopa might need to worry about his selection before long.

This was the team that comprehensively thrashed Middlesex on some fairly dank April days last year:
Joyce Wells Yardy Prior Machan Zaidi Brown Piolet Anyon Magoffin Lewis
One retired, two seriously injured, and probably 3 others with question marks around form or health. Writing this just after James Harris destroyed Durham, wfollowing some powerful first innings batting from Middlesex, the match looks to offer some very different challenges, but Harris own form set aside, you couldn't really argue that Middlesex have stronger bowling now (Murtagh, who might not be fit, Harris, Finn, Rayner, Franklin and Voges) than Sussex. If conditions really do favour seam bowling then surely Magoffin will come back into his own, supported by Shahzad and with further backing from two of Robinson, Mills and Hobden.
It is the batting that we thought would be so strong and has let us down early in every game, and in the crucial middle order during the second innings against Durham. Never mind whether the wicket was rolled or not, we should have been good for another 50 runs. Cachopa set high expectations for himself last summer and lived up to them in New Zealand cricket in the winter; now we expect him to perform consistently and score heavily, especially if Joyce has to continue opening. Without knowing anything about Yardy's current fitness - is he playing in the T20 practice games this week? - I would suggest this as our best team for this match:
Nash Joyce Machan Cachopa Wright Finch Brown Robinson Shahzad Magoffin Hobden
Finch because his determination helped add important runs at Durham, even though not quite enough that was hardly his fault, and at a pinch, some extra seam bowling. Nash would have a little work to do, more so if wicket and weather encourage spin later. Mills could come in for Hobden if fit and as an acknowledged rotation and not as a rebuke to Hobden who has bowled with very little luck since the first game.
It isn't an ideal team, but we lack a consistent opening pair and a top class spinner, although there is a chance that Robinson may be the all-round successor to Martin-Jenkins.

What's Nash done that Wells ain't? Or Cachopa? Get Wells back in as opener then Joyce can go back to where he prefers, and where he makes our order look stronger. If it's Finch, which is fair enough, get him opening. Either way, drop Joyce down and go with actual openers. Top v second, the Middle v Sussex at Hove, a corker. What will the pitch do? Turn like a banana, slosh through like a wet fart, or put the batsmen in an ambulance. Who knows? Seriously, who knows?

The present weather forecast is set fair for the match with no rain and temperatures are hotting up come Monday. But then this could turn on a cumulus. Given all the technology I still find it amazing how wrong the weathermen can be. www.bbc.co.uk/weather/

What are your feelings about moving Machan up and letting him have a go at opening. After all, he's been doing for the seconds and lets face it, he's practically doing it now, coming in after two or three overs. I agree I'd like to see Joyce back down the order

A definite no for me JB. He's just broke through properly, succeeded temporarily, and the last thing I would do is move him now. Everybody opens for the seconds if they're considered for the firsts, even bowlers, that's a final test. I know of a few who think it's pretty different to open, Trott, Boycs, and probably most pros. It might all be in the nut but it is what it is. Leave him at three.
It's gotta be Wells - Being dropped after two games was harsh in the extreme in the first place, he is a signed, sealed and delivered opener.
P.S. It's all about wind Fluffy. When they create a machine that can read what way the wind will blow they'll nail it every time, possibly.

Middlesex have named the following 13-man squad for the match against Sussex: Adam Voges (captain), Nick Compton, Neil Dexter, Steven Finn, James Franklin, Nick Gubbins, James Harris, Harry Podmore, Ollie Rayner, Sam Robson, Toby Roland-Jones, John Simpson and Paul Stirling. www.middlesexccc.com/news/2015/sussex-ccc-v-middlesex-ccc-match-preview/Murtagh has a torn hamstring and will be out for 6 weeks. Also injured and unavailable are Malan and Helm. Looking at the excllent "Middlesex till we die" message board (http://www.cricketnetwork.co.uk/boards/read/s66.htm?67,15220584) injuries to their players are just as much of a concern as they are to us.

Looks like a good team - Comps, Robs and Vogs getting the bulk of the runs while Finns, Hars and Toby Roland-Jones get the bulk of the wickets. Should be very ints - that's short for interesting.
Nasher Wellso Mach-man Joycie Chops/Fincher/Yardsville Lukey Wright Wright Wright - that's one person Browny Robbo Shazza Mag-man Hobbo
Wonder what on earth the strip will be like on this occasion - might have to stick Millso in or, on the flip side, Beero and the Zad-man.

Bleedin' heck it's been pouring with rain at Hove for the last hour or so and the great BBC weather forecast are proclaiming a dry and fair day. Perhaps, an inquest along the lines of the election pollsters is in aid.
It better stop soon otherwise Sunday morning play could be in jeopardy.

Squad announced as: BC Brown (wkt) C Cachopa HZ Finch ME Hobden EC Joyce (c) MW Machan SJ Magoffin CD Nash OE Robinson A Shahzad LWP Wells LJ Wright MH Yardy SAA Zaidi That gives plenty of options. Mills, Hatchett and Anyon are still listed as injured, as is Prior, and of course Jordan is unavailable pending something or other to do with England. The fact that Yardy is included and the Preview ( www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/preview-sussex-poised-for-top-of-the-table-clash-at-hove ) specifically welcomes him back from illness suggests that he will play. If so he could replace Finch or Cachopa from the Durham team. Wells hasn't had much opportunity to show whether he has found the form that he was missing in the first two games, although Nash took his opportunity in the first T20 against Hampshire. My feeling is that this could be the team to play: Nash Joyce Machan Cachopa Wright Yardy Brown Robinson Shahzad Magoffin Hobden

Agree that is the likely team and good to see Yardy back. The fact that Mills is still injured is worrying and is why Essex made little effort to keep him, according to the Essex supporters I met at Chelmsford on the Sunday of the Essex v Kent match last month. But now Ollie Robinson's step-father is running the England team, are we about to lose him to the Test squad?

Got a good feeling we can win this one - especially if we can exploit 'home roller advantage', whatever that is!
I know Howard said it was "totally irrelvant" that Durham had Middx 37-7 in the last game, but I think it will have undermined the confidence of their batsmen. In the previous match v Somerset they lost 7 for 71 in collapsing from 246-3 to 317 all out. Against Notts they went from 59-1 to 147-8.
Despite the obvious threat of Robson, Compton and Voges at the top of the order, there is a real soft underbelly there - their batting has collapsed in at least one innings of all three LVCC games so far.
By the way, we can forget about taking Tredwell on loan again. Kent have dropped the struggling Riley from their squad for tomorrow's game v Glamorgan and reinstated their England spinner. (Interestingly, Captain Key has also dropped himself from the side...)
