hh You asked for a spinner well Rafiq is still available. He has to offer more than Zaidi and will probably come cheap as no one else has offered him a contract.

Last I heard he was marketing himself as a personal coach. Presumably he went the rounds of the counties and no one was prepared to make him an offer. That seems rather sad for someone whose career promised so much. Currently Sussex have Burgoyne, formerly of Derbyshire, as a triallist with the Seconds.

Yes perhaps there's an issue we're not aware of with Rafiq. He seems of the right age and pedigree to be a very good signing for a county looking for a spinning all rounder, a genuine all rounder at that. In our case, with Zaidi already contracted, perhaps it's just that we don't have a vacancy. The odd bit was that Rafiq himself was making encouraging noises earlier in the year about joining Sussex, then nothing.

All this talk of a spinner,
Has Will Beer left then?
If not, perhaps he'll be unwrapped on Friday? Play the boy now let's see what he can do.
What's wrong with the wicket? Let's hear from the groundsman?

62 extras, that's certainly 40 more runs conceded than we should have done! Are none of our batsmen capable of building a substantial innings? Yes the extras are a worry, especially the no balls. Certainly, the top order has failed again, but it's to be hoped we still have a few batters to come, who are capable of playing that substantial innings. Given our depleted bowling resources, we need to post a very substantial score if we are to have a chance of winning this one. A bad session this morning, and we could be facing two defeats in a row, and a start similar to last season Looking like that might have been a forlorn hope, wheels coming off already

I was hoping to go down tomorrow. Will it still be on?

I was hoping to go down tomorrow. Will it still be on? Probably - but for how long?!

77 run deficit on 1st innings. How is Ed going to marshal his bowling attack for the rest of the day? Will Shahzad be able to bowl? Will Hobden be able to rectify yesterday's problems? Will Magoffin be able to bowl more than his usual quota? Can Ollie Robinson continue to surprise us? Can Nash and Yardy come to the party?
Questions, questions . . .

Will Hobden be able to rectify yesterday's problems? Sadly not. It's distresing to see a bowler lose the plot so badly. As soon as he comes on all the pressure is off the batsmen and he concedes 25 in three overs, doubling the Middx score. Joyce has to remove him from the attack or else his confidence is going to be destroyed and Sussex are going to be chasing a mammoth total in the 4th innings...

With Sussex being bowled out in little more than three hours , this is very tough on the bowlers to have to do it all over again so soon and without Shahzad...

Thank the planet Krypton that Ollie's got his pants on over his tights again. 7-72 in the match so far.

That's the chap, and a very good run out it was and some excellent all-round fielding.

His first spell, coming down the hill he no balled once and lost a little pace in the effort not to re-offend. As a result he wasn't able to exploit the bounce fully and got pulled a couple of times. He won applause from the whole ground for coming back from this with some tighter bowling and was unlucky not to have a couple of wickets in his closing spell, although Rayner was chancing his arm and scoring a few from him. On the whole I think he did very well to put that ghastly first innings experience behind him and to contribute fully to the attack. He certainly needs some time out to work on that final delivery leap and recover the smooth action he showed in the early games, but he seems to have the self-belief to do so.

11 wicketless overs for 52 at least suggests some improvement after his first three went for 25. Good for the Sussex faithful for applauding him. But I fear the no-balls and byes and the ill-directed long-hops and juicy half-volleys he has served up in this match may end up costing Sussex the points. Let's hope the batters prove me wrong and chase down the 250 or whatever it is Midd set us. It will be interesting to see how the wicket plays on day three. Grounders reckons it will get flatter, Angus Fraser reckons it will get harder to bat on. And where does 'home roller advantage' fit in to all this? If grounders is right , then Sussex may be favourites. If Fraser is correct,. then Middx may be in pole position. Meanwhile, my real disaffection today is not directed at poor Matt Hobden but at myself. When I dropped hh at his home after close of play last night, I told him and Mrs hh that if I went to cricket today it wouldn't be to Hove but to the Oval to see the Sangakarra and Pietersen master class in partnership.
Then when I woke up this morning, I decided that sod's law meant they'd probably both be out by 11.30, so I stayed home and painted the bathroom. Bad decision. Grrrrrr!!!!!
