1) DAVID WILLEY. Reportedly determined to leave Northants at the end of this season. Has a year to go on his contract but also apparently has an escape clause that allows him to go a year early.
2) SEAN DICKSON. 23 year-old opening batsman with f/c experience in South Africa, but qualifed like Cachopa via British or EU passport and therefore available now. Scoring hundreds for fun as a trialist in the Kent second XI in all formats (he smashed another one today in a T20 game), but Kent won't contract him as he doesn't fit the chief exec's policy, which aims to put out a 'Kent only' XI.

I believe Sussex were interested in Willey before they signed Mills.

I believe Sussex were interested in Willey before they signed Mills. I wonder who put a stop to that - Willey or Northants? Not sure, but wasn't he having a baby or something, and decided to stay put for a while. Would be an excellent signing, as he would offer us left arm variation in the championship, something we lost with the injury to Mills. I hope I'm not being too premature there about Mills, but I'm under the impression that his condition is such, that he won't ever play four day cricket again Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't the idea that he will become a T20 specialist? Wiley is not far off being a genuine all rounder, and has even opened the innings in one day games. Now with Prior having left, and some slack in the budget, let's make it happen, he ticks all the right boxes for Sussex at the moment. I believe there was strong interest from Surrey and Durham last year when it seemed he might be available.

Willey would be an incredible signing but if he does leave then much more likely to go to one of the big boys unfortunately.
What about one of the Worcs seamers if they go down again? Both Leach and Morris are young bowlers with cracking figures with the ball and in leach's case the bat as well.
Does anyone know if we are interested in signing any of the trialists we've had in the seconds? Burgoyne?

We must be able to compete salary-wise with the big boys, with losing a few experienced pros and possibly a few moving on in the winter. I guess it depends if we stay in Div 1 as to whether we could attract someone like Willey. There's also the issue that he will probably end up missing a lot of cricket through international commitments.

I would like to think that we could make such a signing, even if we had to reduce the size of the squad to do so. We need an injection of quality, and we'd certainly get that with Willey. With us able to enlist another overseas player next season, the opportunity is there to seriously strengthen the side.

Does anyone know what's happening with Tredwell at the end of the season? Was he offered a contract extension, and did he sign it?

Dickson and Willey? There's a pattern emerging here and I don't like it. I also don't like bending the rules by employing foreign imports when we can produce English players instead. Wouldn't mind a bit of Willey but I don't want no dick son.
What's happened to Andrew? We liked him apparently but he ain't been playing for Worcs. Trouble is, we spent quite big in the close season and it ain't paid off, yet. I guess the Prior money will free up some spend, hopefully, and Mills will need a lesser contract too. Plus, there seems no point to keeping Liddle and Piolet with Sussex preferring to get a loan player ahead of either when faced with injuries. One bowler - Andrew/Willey, one batter - Mehela/Bailey, and a bit of faith in our own spinners and we're set - until next season's massive blip.
I wonder if anyone will pull me up on the hypocrisy between the paragraphs.

He's been injured subsequently and his place has been taken very successfully by Joe Leach. He played as a batsman a couple of weeks ago for Worcs 2nds and may have some difficulty getting back into the side. Useful player but 32 later this year and with recent injury problems not really a bright prospect for the future.

I'd hope we steer well clear of players with recent injury problems, we simply can't afford any more of those gambles. With four players already carrying long term injuries, and facing an uncertain future, perhaps in hindsight it was too much of a gamble signing Mills and Shahzad. The stark reality is we've seen little or nothing from all six players, with two already having retired, and another contemplating retiring from first class cricket.

Yet another hundred for Sean Dickson for Kent IIs today, his second ton of the week.
This lad is scoring runs for fun and if Kent won't contract him because their chief executive has an ambition to create a side that is 100 per cent home-bred (nine in their side v Australians), then someone else should move in, because he is hot - and he has a UK/EU passport...

I've not seen Dickson play, but how often do those kind of signings work? Surely he'd have played a bit more first class cricket in South Africa if he was that good, and we are counting the cost of giving Zaidi a two year contract on the back of some decent second XI cricket. Even he and Cachopa had played a fair bit more first class cricket at home before coming over so the risk was less.
