We need to try and bring some seamers through, and with spinners Doram and Rawlins retained, it makes sense to offer a place to Ben Twine But based on what? Twine took 9-460 in 2015 with a best of 2-24 for the U17s / SCCC Dev XI. There were five bowlers (Collard, Oxley, Smith, Gordon and Rattle) better than him for the Under 17s in 2015 only three of whom have been selected for the Academy. Obviously the coaches must have seen some untapped potential however in terms of performance there were certainly 2/3 more deserving players. As far as bringing seamers through goes we now have Garton, Hatchett, Hobden and Whittingham on the staff (unless you mean Under 17s). I suppose I'm old fashioned but I believe in picking your best players. I would hope that when Burt, Doram, Jenner, Norris and Rawlins finish in the Academy next year that Bertwistle and Collard are given serious consideration as their performances over the last two year's have certainly warranted Academy selection. At the moment Ella McCaughan, Coco Streets and Ella Bourne would be the three other players I would select for the Academy in 2017. My starting twelve for the Under 17 boys following this squad announcement would be Haines (c), Ward, Billings (+), Lincoln, Clark, Orr, Gordon, Oxley, Twine, Smith, Collard, Rattle Reserves: Lenham (batsman), Walker (batsman), Wood (batsman), Atkins (seamer), Heath (seamer) and Hobbs (seamer). Orr is the reserve keeper. Collard, Oxley and Rattle are the spinners. Gordon, Smith, Twine, Atkins, Heath and Hobbs are the seamers. I have dropped Ollie Bradley as he only scored 47 runs @ 9.4 and took 1-18 with the ball from three matches in 2015.

I did ask earlier, but do you know if Jonty Jenner still keeps, or has he given it up? Yes, he's given up the gloves. He hit a 131* for Hurstpierpoint College on Tuesday in a T20 friendly v Preston Nomads. Tom Haines hit 81* in the same match. Two exciting young batsmen coming through our academy.

A good effort by the Under 17s considering Ward, Billings, Gordon, Rattle and Orr were missing. In their absence Betley, Gilligan, Patel, White and Wood were given a run out.
My Under squad for 2016
Batsmen: Haines (c), Ward, Lincoln, Clarke, Betley, Lenham, Wood, Walker Keepers: Billings, Gilligan, Orr Spinners: Collard, Patel, Oxley, Rattle Seamers: Atkins, Gordon, Smith, Twine, Heath, Hobbs, Whyte
