At least four times now this season.
Twice at hove v Lancs seconds.
Glam v hants at cardiff on Sunday.
Now Kent twos v hants at their polo farm training ground today. Apparently a relaid pitch again.
Don't remember this ever happening before. Over reaction to the Hughes incident or a decline in the standard of groundsmanship?

Over reaction to the Hughes incident, possibly.

Was Hughes death down to the pitch? Such freak accidents surely more likely on good pitches where batsmen get in line, esp with helmets, and go for it. On less reliable pitches you duck, sway or get out of the way in any other available fashion. Andy mckay didn't think the hove pitches were dangerous, according to hh who spoke to him about it.

I guess it depends on your appetite for risk. I sense the 'authorities' are petrified of the prospect of another 'freak accident', and are now less willing to endorse the macho approach to facing short, fast bowling. i would be interested to hear what recent advice has been given to umpires on assessing 'dangerous' pitches. In hindsight, the first in a series of events will be seen not to be freakish, after all.
