A steady start to the Test at Canterbury with Australia not exactly dominant against some accurate English bowling, notably Brunt and Shrubsole. Crowd doesn't look all that big from the shots I've seen so far, but the damp, overcast morning may have put some off. See soft and fluffy's excellent piece here: unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/12000/threadOn edit: Just as I was about to post that Australia women had comfortably exceeded the men's first innings total, Villani falls to Shrubsole at 66-1.

A terrific game developing here, with Jonassen finally out for a 99 made in over 4 hours off 197 balls - real guts and determination. England suffering early on with Winfield and Taylor out to consecutive balls from Perry and the innings still listing badly at 81-4.
Test cricket of a good standard and thoroughly entertaining.

Well, England might be praying for rain at Canterbury. One sided day yesterday.

Think the standard has been absolutely dire. Summed up by greenway ducking under a 69 mph "bouncer". It hit her leg stump with the batsman prone on the ground. Risible dismissal, particularly after she had batted two and a half hours for 16 runs.
As invicta said in another thread, you want to support the women's game but when all they do is pat floaty half volleys back to the bowler hour after hour it is very hard. Paul Allott on commentary clearly exasperated by such rubbish and trying desperately hard not to show it. England in this match so far have batted 140 overs for 250 runs. It's ghastly stuff to watch.

Do the women play much 1st class cricket during the course of the season? I wonder if they're just ill prepared for the longer form of the game. Can anyone shed any light on this?

That is the nub of the problem. They only play 20/20 and 50 over cricket in England as far as I understand. The next Test match according to the commentators is not until 2018! Test cricket is not taken seriously by the powers that be.

Test cricket is not taken seriously by the powers that be. Well, how ridiculous if the only 1st class cricket they play is a single test match every few years. I wonder if the Aussie women get more practice - they certainly look as if they do.
