My prediction of being over in 14 overs is close. Looks like it will be 15 overs with 4 needed to win.
Has Sussex reached the bottom now or is there worse to come?
Blame it on the match-fixing, injuries, whatever... the simple truth is that Sussex do not have a competitive T20 squad. Question: How has it taken just 2 years to go from one of the strongest teams in the tournament to now one of the weakest?
While other counties have improved their skills year on year, Sussex have stayed stationary and are now in free-fall.
Surrey win by 10 wickets in 15.3 overs. Very, very, very embarrassing.
frawdy,
If I was Ed Joyce, I would be ordering some of my players in-front of the firing squad tonight. Ed, who is not a T20 cricketer, was still the best Sussex player at the Oval.

Simple S&F, bad recruitment.

The team is in utter free fall. We are a laughing stock in 20/20- not even competitive these days, to not even take a single wicker and be rolled over with four plus overs to spare is, frankly an utter embarrassment . This season and team in now in utter free fall and we need to stem this decline , somehow, I'm lost for words !

Yes, but how do you stem the free-fall when Yardy is out for another 6 weeks, the bowlers are not competitive enough and, apart from Joyce, the batters are infected with inconsistency?
The bottom-line is, the other counties are all-round better than us. We won the wooden spoon last season and at this rate we will win it again this year.
To repeat my question: How can a T20 side who were one of the strongest in the tournament for many years become the weakest in just two years. How is that possible? Bad recruitment cannot be the whole answer.
One suggestion: T20 county batsmen have improved greatly in recent years. The Sussex bowlers have not and gone backwards, while other county bowlers have improved. The Surrey bowlers were immeasurably better, especially Batty.
We are not competitive because the side has not improved, remained stationary, and all and asunder have overtaken us.

Close one. Despite injuries and call-ups the squad still looks decent to me, much better than this. We have gone seriously backwards but I can't really see it with the squad and acquisitions. I think it's the thing that I think hit us last season, the dreaded match fixing scandal. We're reeling, we're weak. They turned it round last season though so...
Our bowling in this form is close to useless without Jordan but Arafat's signature was a move in the right direction. We need to lose the constant bad performers, Liddle and Zaidi to name two. We either have to go with youth, Hatch, Hob, or we'll need to turn to the old heads. Why not Mags? Anyon may have to come in, and how we could do with Khan in this form - he showed real form in this stuff and before his injury but we replaced him with Lewis, for some reason.
I'd do a mixture of both, bring in Mags and Hatchett, keep Piolet and Beer, add that to Arafat and see where it gets us. We need to do something pretty drastic whatever it is.

Not sure that we do have the squad capable of turning this around. However, I'd be happy to go with youngsters, if only for the fact that the thirty something are unlikely to get better. I'm totally perplexed as to why we handed out those two year contracts in the winter. It has severely limited our ability to shake things up next season.

Came up to London for a lunch and as it didn't end until 4pm went to the Oval on spur of moment. I now remember why I seldom do t20 games. That was the most one sided game I've ever seen (I missed the 9 over Sri Lanka thrashing at Hove).
Surrey were up for it. But Sussex played like they were there to make up the numbers. No belief. Terrible body language. Bowlers look like they don't want to bowl. Batsmen look bereft of confidence.
Robinson needs to take a long hard look at what is going on. How did he let things slide to this sorry state? Awful beyond words. Hard to see where next win is coming from.

PS : to those who say Panesar derailed us last season and disrupted the dressing room, it is beginning to look like he was just a convenient scapegoat?

Mark Davis called for the senior pros to stand up and be counted, well one did, the one that always does. It's simply not good enough

Cricinfo doesn't hold back with their review of last night's match describing it as "a mauling". The journo with the longest name in sport, who has regularly watched Sussex play this season, adds salt to the wound when he continues, "(Surrey) played out the match with the control of champions." Whether Surrey are enjoying an OD cricket renaissance or Sussex never turned up to the Oval party is uncertain. But whereas Barack Obama would have conceded defeat with defiance and charisma, Sussex hoisted the white flag with pusillanimous dishonour. And while some might rationally say, the 'T20 Blast Southern League' is still wide open, where even the top dog Hampshire were beaten by Somerset last night, the question-mark is not about Sussex's ability but their lack of backbone, character and desire to win. Is this all about injuries and allegations of match-fixing or does the malaise go deeper? Captain Marvel's present one-man show alongside his philosophy of leading the team by example is not rubbing off. And in such cases a macho 'Fergie Hairdryer' in the dressing room may do more good by waking the team up from their present somnambulist ways. This responsibility must come from the coaching staff and the senior players. For gaining the wooden spoon two years in a row from a county once heralded as one of the strongest T20 teams in the land is not only highly embarrassing but does a great disservice to the potential and ability of the Sussex squad. www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2014/content/story/752285.html

This responsibility must come from the coaching staff and the senior players. Do you think that the fact that several of the senior coaching staff have itchy feet might also be unsettling? Both Robinson and Davis applied for other jobs over the winter/spring. They would both have prefered to be at Lord's today with new employers, working for England and Sri Lanka respectively, rather than heading for Arundel with Sussex.

bm, This has crossed my mind too. Every season the same supporters start calling for Robinson's head but it always turns out to be a knee-jerk reaction. I have nothing but respect for Robbo. He is Sussex through and through. He wears his heart on his sleeve and we know he's hurting badly over the match-fixing allegations. As our chairman keeps reminding us, Robbo has been the most successful coach in the county's 175 years. But... As we saw when Ferguson forewarned his impending retirement 6 years ago half way through the season, Man U's form dropped alarmingly and Fergie was forced to retract his words. So, yes, you make a very good point. At some point, Robinson needs to move on and Sussex CCC needs to move on but when is that moment? Like a very close relationship, the parting of the ways can be painful and neither partner wishes to be the catalyst. At present, only a full-time England coaching job may push Robinson away from the coast. But his recent England interview must prey on the Sussex players, especially when not one but both senior coaches were seeking other jobs. This cannot help the stability or confidence of the side.

While I accept Sussex gained the wooden spoon in the T20 format, the side came 3rd in the Championship. Their best position since last winning the trophy in 2007. One can hardly describe that as "the wheels have come off in the last 2 years."
