" The ECB are considering scrapping the toss in Division Two County Championship cricket in a bid to encourage counties to produce better pitches. Instead of a toss, the visiting team will be allowed to decide whether to bat or bowl first. The hope is that it will encourage counties and their groundstaffs to prepare less bowler-friendly wickets in the knowledge that their opposition will have the choice of have to exploit them. The idea, revealed by the Telegraph, has been recommended by the ECB's cricket committee and will now be discussed by the executive board. If the move is agreed, as seems likely, it could be introduced for the 2016 season." www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2016/content/story/944067.htmlThis has sparked off a lively debate here ( unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/14575/thread) and throughout the media. So what do we think collectively? Here is a poll to consider three options: The toss is an integral part of the game and should not be done away with Accept the 1 year trial and review at the end of 2016 The ECB case for change is not supported by research - don't change just for the sake of it This poll is open until midnight Saturday 28th November, or if Fraudster starts posting again, until the next milennium.

I guess this poll is now redundant, in view of the amended proposal from the ECB.

I guess this poll is now redundant, in view of the amended proposal from the ECB. Not completely redundant: there was a lively response and a good discussion and we'll now wait and see what happens in practice. But forum members views are pretty strong on this, with those opposed to the abandonment of the toss outweighing the trialist supporters by 2 :1.

those opposed to the abandonment of the toss outweighing the trialist supporters by 2 :1. The three votes for evidence based changes were not necessarily against abandonment of the toss.

Can I not vote because of this obsessive 48 hour expiration we still seem to have in place, despite my numerous complaints about it? Remind me, is the close season six days or six months? Yeah I'm talking to you Moddy.
