Excellent interview here www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/story/950259.html by David Hopps with the ECB Director of participation and growth. A former marketing man with bags of enthusiasm and passion for the game it is revealing that he has come from Cricket Australia where the Big Bash concept was specifically used to grow new spectator involvement AND participation in the sport at amateur level. Cricket Australia achievements 2011-15 Big Bash attendances up by 72%, TV viewership up by 700%, wider audience with 47% families and 42% women 32% increase in kids' club involvement Three times as many kids in school programmes 70% of schools integrating cricket into their curriculum with a World Cup resource Extra 220 women's and girls' teams across the nation These things are not coincidental and they can happen here. What is needed is a positive approach, and Sussex Cricket has an excellent opportunity to grasp this in every way, not only by their own admirable stratgey for community involvement being allied with national initiatives, but by accepting and understanding the need for innovation in the T20 game to blow the glowing embers into a flame of positive involvement.
