Potentially an excellent signing and he is available for a large part of the season. Should provide genuine quality to the top order. Well done to those involved in obtaining his signature.

Excellent signing - a genuine class batsman and a superb close catcher, both qualities missing recently. I wonder who is lined up for the second half of the season?

Guess this means that the two reluctant openers, will have to grin and bare it. Nash and Joyce are our best pairing, with presumably Machan at three, Taylor four, Wright at five, but who at six? Will it be Brown, followed by a five man attack, or perhaps another batsman, then Brown, and four bowlers

Will it be Brown, followed by a five man attack, or perhaps another batsman, then Brown, and four bowlers I think you're right, unless Wells really knuckles down and shows he has the ability to play consistently. The four bowler option will be ok for early season wickets, but from July onwards I would like to see something other than Nash or Wells in reserve when we have to bowl sides out on hard wickets. I know there is a gulf between the First and Second division sides but Sussex have to win consistently to be sure of getting the one promotion place that may be all there is on offer if the First division is to be trimmed from 2017. For that reason, and because I think the side is lacking balance I'd still like to see an all-rounder play from July.

One possibility, if we did decide to go for six batsman, would be Wells dropping down to six and really trying to develop his leg spin. I think it would be wasted having Joyce batting at six. Another possibility is, if there is any money left in the kitty, trying to recruit an all rounder

Ross Taylor will absolutely marmalise weak div two attacks and, unlike the majority of overseas signings, being a Kiwi he is well used to the kind of green-tinged wickets that may be served up early season.
Top six will start in my opinion as
Joyce Wells Machan Taylor Nash Wright
Brown is good enough to bat at six, esp. in the lower division, so Wells, Machan and Nash will all need to deliver because as soon as one of them hits a bad trot, their place will be v vulnerable.

Perhaps he should move up one, and bat at three Don't they always say, your best bat should be at three

My starting XI would be: Joyce Nash Taylor Wright Machan Brown Jordan Shahzad Robinson Hobden Magoffin
Looks pretty healthy to me.

Your fifth man is only going to get a few overs up hill into the wind around the 70th over mark while the four senior quicks have a blow before fighting it out for the new ball. Even the seam-obssessed Robinson only ever played four !

Even the seam-obssessed Robinson only ever played four ! I guess it will come down to whether or not we want to include Briggs's left arm variety early season, or just go for the four quicks. It depends what Briggs has been told, whether or not he's been promised to start most games. We could still play him, AND four seamers of course, but that means Jordan at 7. Nowadays, most counties will have a pretty solid batter at 7, and although he can bat, I would never describe CJ as a solid bat
