Our feature race is the Class 3 ATR Sussex National which has been increased from £25,000 to £30,000 this year. There are two other class 3 races on the card including the SIS bonus races. The first race is at 12:40 with gates opening at 11:00. 73 horses have declared. One other important information is that the railway crossing is still close. Thanks for this coverpoint and your tips are always welcome. Is this one of the Sussex CCC Reciprocal events? Unfortunately not. The reciprocal days for feature meetings tend to be those further away apart from Easter when there is no reciprocals at all. I think the closest for this meeting is Worcester with the others being in Yorkshire and Scotland (x2)! Reciprocal days have been confirmed although I don't have them to hand. I will come back with dates although I think one is in February, one is in October and one is in November.

Commiserations to coverpoint on a rain-ruined day at Plumpton. I see that of the three races that actually did run before abandonment that you had the first two as winners and a non-runner in the third, so your reputation as a tipster remains high!

Unfortunately in the hour between the first and the third race conditions got significantly worse and after 31mm of rain, significantly more than the 8-13mm forecasted, we were left with no option but to abandon the race meeting after three races. It is only the second time a race meeting has been abandoned during the meeting in the last 36 years. Inevitably there will be some punters will believe the decision to abandon the meeting after the third race was a financial one, because there are no refunds after the third race, however this is simply untrue. The horse and jockey welfare must come first. The final decision was a joint decision made between the Trainers, Jockeys, BHA and the Clerk of the Course. There was no inspection the day before or on the morning as in the opinion of the Clerk of the Course it was raceable. It only started raining at 9am. The problem is once it started it didn't stop. Had it stopped raining we would have got through the meeting. A precautionary inspection was called by the BHA at 11:30 however no issues were identified and they gave us the all clear to race. The jockeys at the start were happy to race and it was only after the third race that they expressed concerns about continuing racing. This was the second race on the hurdle course and the problem was they were running over the same ground which had been churned up from the previous hurdle race. We didn't get the Sussex National in which was the fifth race on the card and our main race. We are looking into the possibility of staging this race on another raceday possibly in February however the British Horseracing Association will decide this. This is not something we can influence at all as it depends on the fixture list and the type of races elsewhere in the country. Here is the BHA Stewards' Report for Sunday. Interestingly of the twelve people who were involved in the final decision only one (Clerk of the Course) was actually from Plumpton Racecourse. media.britishhorseracing.com/pdf/stewardsreport/?fixtureId=1327&year=2016

Plumpton Racecourse is delighted to announce that it has rescheduled the At The Races Sussex National to take place on Easter Sunday, 27th March. The Sussex National will join The Totepool Sussex Champion Hurdle for an Easter Bonanza.
Kate Hills, Chief Executive Officer for the Sussex course said:
“We are very pleased that we are able to reschedule the At The Races Sussex National to our Totepool Easter Festival. Easter Sunday is the earliest it could be fitted in to the overall racing calendar and we are grateful to the British Horseracing Authority for their assistance in rearranging this popular race.”
With the two special feature races, Easter Sunday will become Plumpton’s richest raceday ever with nearly £80K in prize money which amounts to £131K over the two-day Easter Festival. Make sure you’re there by booking your tickets online now!

On a slightly different note, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on why attendance at race meetings in Sussex, and nationally, has increased so much in recent years, against a pattern of decline in many other spectator sports, cricket not least.

On a slightly different note, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on why attendance at race meetings in Sussex, and nationally, has increased so much in recent years, against a pattern of decline in many other spectator sports, cricket not least. Our attendances went up against because of the fact that in 2014 Easter Sunday and Ladies Day (second Sunday in May) were decimated by the weather which meant that only 2,000 rather than 4,200 and 3,000 attended in 2014. Additionally, we had over 5,500 not including kids attend on Easter Monday and nearly 10,000 between the two days and nearly 3,000 on Ladies Day. We also lost two race meetings in 2014 albeit we would normally only have expected a crowd of c.1000 people. Other racecourse have tried various promotions and discounts to attract racegoers such as discounts for students and in the case of Windsor they had a free evening meeting which attracted 9,700. One concern I do have is the average age of our annual members which is certainly higher than I would like and probably too male dominated. We need to attract people of all ages and gender. Plumpton is currently the only racecourse in the country that doesn't charge for racecards and it offers entry for £10 to seven meetings out of sixteen if you purchase your tickets six days or more in advance. It is also possible to purchase a picnic area ticket for the centre course on Easter, Ladies Day and Family Day for just £10. Entrance for under 18s is free. The Paddock restaurant is normally booked out. Racing is not without its problems though. Owners demand more prize money yet currently pay entry fees which are 1/200 of prize money. Owners are very demanding in terms of facilities and food and drink offerings. At lot of owners complain about the prize money but the truth is the prize is low because of little they contribute in the first place. The shortfall is made by a combination of Horseracing Betting Levy Board funding, sponsorship and racecourse contribution. However, most racecourse would not be racing at all if it were not for the excellent picture rights and media rights from companies like SIS and ATR. Where the system may fall down is through the growth of offshore bookmakers which might lead to the funding from the HBLB potentially reducing by 50% over the next five years. How this shortfall is going to be solved is a massive problem for racing going forward. For me Owners need to step up and contribute more into the pot especially if they want more prize money.
