Any news on the MCC team other than Bell? Could we see a few Sussex representatives? Just released. This is the squad for the Yorkshire game and the Emirates T20 tournament. www.lords.org/news/2016-2/february/tredwell-and-borthwick-part-of-mcc-squad-led-by-bellNobody from Sussex, unless you count Tredwell's short liasion. A couple of up and comers and a few hasbeens. Still, at least Yorkshire have requested it be played with a red ball and in day conditions, which makes it a bit more like proper practice for championship cricket; perhaps they are serious about winning for a third time this year.

Borthwick might be worth looking at again by England. He gets his 1,000 runs a season and has his leg breaks as well. If Moin continues to lose form then he might get a chance again.

Pathetic decsion by MCC captain and new Warwicks skipper Ian Bell. After bowling out Yorks, MCC had one over to face before stumps - and sent in a nightwatchman, who took the first ball and was told he was to face all six balls and was on no account to take a run and expose the other opener to a single ball.

Although cricinfo still describes this match as the "curtain raiser for the new county season" it seems that the ECB have other views. Their report of the first day's play describes the events in this context: "Gary Ballance scored the first century of the domestic county season as Yorkshire were bowled out for 275 on day one of their four-day contest against Marylebone Cricket Club in Abu Dhabi." www.ecb.co.uk/news/articles/ballance-and-rhodes-rescue-yorkshireOn the ECB website this seems to be confirmed with the fixtures listed as Domestic Other Matches 2016 www.ecb.co.uk/stats/fixtures-results/fixtures.htmlIn previous years this has been regarded as a first-class match but not one where performances count towards the forthcoming cricket season's averages. Is this the ECB's way of boosting the first-class portion of the English game to compensate for the future loss of Championship fixtures? Perhaps we could have a return of the Scarborough and Hastings festival end-of-season matches, played in October adjacent to a lot of sand? And has anyone told the statisticians?

Great thinking and I'm glad it worked out so well. After half an hour this morning, MCC were 14-2 !!!

Last year white hope Adam Riley played for MCC against Yorkshire. He took 4-118 in 35 overs, but ended up with 12 wickets for Kent at 53, evidently enduring that difficult second-season syndrome. The man he replaced in the Kent side, James Tredwell, eventually found his way back and over the course of 7 games , 164 overs took 11 wickets at 40 each.
In the current game, against the star-studded Yorkshire side Tredwell has so far bowled 59 overs and taken 6-123.
It ain't 'arf a funny old game.
