theleopard I would be fascinated to hear your rationale for suggesting Leicester as champions of div two.Yes they have recruited some experienced batsmen in Horton, Dexter and Pettini but I wonder how they will take 20 wickets in a match regularly.

Who'd expect Leicester to go from bottom to top? This isn't Premier League football!

With pleasure. They had 3 bowlers who took over 50 Championship wickets last season. Clint McKay, who is a class act, Ben Raine, who is a real up-and-coming player - he grabbed 59 wickets in what was his first full season, he is not quick but is just the sort of seamer to reap wickets in Division 2, and Charlie Shreck, who yes, is 38, but his 57 wickets suggests he is not a has-been. On top of that they acquired Wayne White towards the end of the season - a well-travelled player, but one who showed for both Derbyshire and Leicestershire that he can be a match-winner - he averaged 21 with the ball in first-class cricket last season. Then there is Neil Dexter, better known as a batsman, but who took 21 wickets at 23 in Division 1 last season, so evidently can do a good job. As back up there is Ollie Freckingham, who seems to have struggled with injuries, but is a decent bowler: average of 24 last season. So I am expecting a much-improved showing. Above there's the option of 6 experienced seamers, which is a much fuller cupboard than a lot of Division 2 sides have. If McKay, Raine and White hit the ground running I could see Leicestershire competing very well. I would certainly be very surprised indeed if they struggle.

If McKay, Raine and White hit the ground running I could see Leicestershire competing very well. I would certainly be very surprised indeed if they struggle. Yes, a bit like Leicestershire in the 60s: Jack Cotton, Terry Spencer, Peter Marner, all admirable seamers who could be relied on to do a certain kind of job for you and on their day a bit more. The problem was that they needed a hell of a lot of runs behind them for that good, workmanlike job to have any effect on deciding the match, and in fact they only got to that stage when they added Lock, swapped Birkenshaw for Savage, and latterly added McKenzie to the mix. I agree, they should continue to improve, and I'm delighted to see the energy and enthusiasm with which they are working at both on-field and off-field activities to sustain cricket in a very competitive part of the country. I'd be much happier to see the Leicestershire of Wasim Khan survive than the money-making machine of Trent Bridge. But the problem is that they don't yet have a side which has a real star bowler, admirable though McKay is, and they don't have the batsmen to rely oin for a big total.

On paper Sussex have a de end line up, if not much squad depth. That lack of depth, and our inability to keep our seamers fit, will see us finish runners up to Worcestershire

Remember, one point for each correct position at season's end.

It looks as though I may need to slip a crisp £20 in the moderator's direction so that I can swap Sussex and Northants round in my prediction.

On the evidence of today's policy Northants are more likely to be first and Sussex seventh. We are shockingly poor at the moment.
