Right-arm pace bowler who came up through the Essex age groups and made his f/c debut for Loughborough Univ v Sussex at Hove in 2014, when he batted at nine.
Signed for Hampshire half-way through 2014 and made one first team appearance in a 50 over game.
After taking disappointingly few wickets in second XI cricket last season, Hants released him at the end of 2015.
Now he has emerged as a batsman and has started the season by smashing 160 from 198 balls for Loughborough v Surrey, followed by 100 not out from 137 balls v Kent today.
First-class average this season : 260.00, batting at seven/eight.
He's also taking wickets - six v Surrey and Northeast and Stevens (for a duck) v Kent to post figures of 2-32 in a Kent total of 393 -7 dec.
Sounds like he could be this season's Ollie Robinson-style discovery and I'd expect someone to sign him when he finishes uni in a couple of months.

Is he not affiliated to any county? Joe Root's brother always looked a good prospect, even before he was taken on by Notts.

Sorry. Didn't realise everyone already knew about him. He's a new name to me and I thought he might be to others, too. Apologies for my poor phraseology, borderman. I meant only to refer to the David Allen blog to give depth to your own enthusiastic and informative post.

No worries, hhs. It was just that the 'yeah everyone knows that' tone made me genuinely think that perhaps everybody was already talking about Akram and I'd somehow missed the buzz!

I saw his innings v Surrey. He looked like a class act. Comfortably dealt with Dunn, the Currans and Footitt. One of those inninhs where the batsman seems to have more time than other players. Towards the end he even flat-batted Footitt for 6 on the off-side.
He must have worked like mad on his game indoors at Loughborough over the winter and made huge progress.

Worth an early season trial would you think? We do have a plethora of middle order batsmen, and openers who aspire to bat in the middle order. I suppose, if his bowling is credible enough to bowl fourth change, then that might help his cause

I thought he looked a cut above. Best university batsman I have seen. Of course it is hard to judge on one innings, but the fact he went on and got another 100 straight after says a lot.

He's doing it again v Leics - came in at 113-5, and is 50 not out overnight, having taken his side to 195-6...this is some purple patch he's enjoying...

Yes, it's the sort of form that should win him a contract at a county After the success's eve had with Ollie Robinson, might we be tempted to take a punt.

And unfortunately these runs won't count as first-class, as only the first two UCCE matches in any season are deemed to be. Ridiculous, and probably the result of a compromise between "they should all be first-class" and "none of them are worthy of first-class status".

Ridiculous, and probably the result of a compromise between "they should all be first-class" and "none of them are worthy of first-class status". Yes, isn't it crazy? The only possible rationale behind this may be that the 3rd round of the games played is after the Championship begins, so it is perhaps thought that the counties are more likely to field a weakened team, while they are "full on" for what is the first real combat before the Championship. The thing is, though, this is Leicestershire's first game. In short, it makes no sense. Certainly a stunning run by Mr Akram, though, completely reversing the "easy runs against the students" idea.

I received my Playfair 2016 Annual. Looking at last year's averages, I noted that Basil Akram's sole first class innings in 2015 yielded: a duck.
As things stand he could therefore rocket from the bottom of the averages in 2015 to the top in 2016.
