With Wood and Footit injured and Jordan not having played a single red ball game since last September, Jake Ball of Notts is allegedly on the verge of a call-up for the first test v Sri Lanka.
I thought he was a bit of newcome to the county scene, but apparently he's 25 and made his Notts first XI debut v Sussex at Hove seven seasons ago...

Given how he has bowled this season he fully deserves a call-up to the England test team.

Ball bowled 30 overs in the first innings of the match just ended between Notts and Hants - but was then pulled out of the game on Monday by Team England to prepare for the second Test. Given that the Test was still five days hence and he's going to be performing yellow bib duties, anyway, can anyone explain the rationale for this?
With the possible exception of players released on the first morning of a Test match, the way cricketers can now be parachuted in and out of county games like this is surely wrong?
Anyway, glad Notts lost under the circs. And worth noting that Hants' match-winner was Mason Crane with six wkts in the game in 27 overs. That's double the number of wickets Briggs has taken in a lower division for Sussex in 106 overs.
Am I right in thinking Robinson sacked Crane, who was then gratefully snapped up by Hants - and he then signed Briggs, whom Hants were happy to release, even though he had another year to go on his contract?

At that time boys would have to trial to get into the relevant age groups, Mason missed the cut that year having been in since U10's. He was at the time at Lancing College and was taken under the wing of their cricket coach Raj Maru, and introduced to Hants through him, who immediately put him in their academy., the rest, as they say, is history. interestingly the player who replaced Woakes because of England duties was Josh Poysden who is another leggie that Sussex weren't interested in!

Mason left Sussex at the age of 14. Didn't release he was that young. When people on here described him as someone Sussex had 'let go', I assumed he had been at least in the top tier of the academy. At such a young age, nobody can be blamed for not recognising his potential. Although the basic point remains - Hants rate him very highly and see him as a match-winner and they are not missing Danny Briggs. Certainly not in red ball cricket after he took just 19 f/c wickets last season. Someone on here said Sussex had specifically signed Briggs to replace Yady as a bowler in T20 and I can see that. But then Jon Filby said no, the intention was that he would play in every CC game as part of a five man attack. Fortunately that plan only lasted three games!
