Losing Graham Ford was a huge blow to Surrey. Everyone you spoke to at the club from the players and media to the ground staff and supporters liked him.
He had got Surrey buzzing again, so for him to return to Sri Lanka, just as the club had returned to Division 1, was a bitter pill to swallow.
Di Venuto - the pressure's on
And like Sussex, the expectations there were massive as this season drew near. Former Surrey players to celebrity supporters were all agreeing that the club
would fair well - many citing a top 4 position in the Championship and at least one OD trophy win in 2016. That is how confident everyone associated with The Oval felt.
Then Ford left.
It is difficult to judge how Surrey's new coach, Michael di Venuto, is fairing. Badly, if you look at the first 6 weeks of the season. Ok, he was the Australian batting coach for
three years but does that make him a good general coach for Surrey?
As Chris Adams discovered, it is one hell of a difficult job to cope with given the massive expectations and the mentality and culture the club express. One must give di Venuto
time to settle in, but one fears that it could easily become an elephants graveyard for him as Surrey supporters think to themselves, 'Here we go again!'
Meanwhile, it's a lose-lose for both parties given Sri Lanka's abject performances against England in the First two Tests.
I actually have sympathy for Surrey supporters, especially if we thrash them tonight!
