Here we go again, if the rain allows. For once a non-floodlit game, in fact a one-day game played on a Sunday afternoon. What an amazing concept! Just think, if it were only 40 overs a side then it might be really popular and have some point to it.

Here we go again, if the rain allows. For once a non-floodlit game, in fact a one-day game played on a Sunday afternoon. Yes, I went to one of those last Sunday between Kent and Surrey and it was an absolutely cracking day from start to finish. Changes needed from the side that lost to Gamorgan, as Sussex seek their first 50 overs win since 2014 (in fact Sussex have only ever won three times in the three year history of the competition...) The Magoffin idea was sound but in practice didn't really work; probably time to bring back Robinson. In the absence of anyone who can bowl in the top six, I wonder if he could even be turned into a pinch-hitter? There needs to be some out-of-the-box thinking, otherwise without a genuine all-rounder we are stuck with only five batsmen, which simply isn't enough with 50 overs to bat through...I'd also move Wright up to open in pursuit of a flying start and drop Joyce down, looking to him and Taylor to score big in the middle overs. Nash Wright Machan Taylor Joyce Brown Jordan Robinson Shahzad Beer Garton Worrying weather forecast both for Hove and for East Grinstead, where we have tickets for an open air production of Midsummer Night's Dream. The company staging it is rather appropriately called Rain Or Shine... www.rainorshine.co.uk/summer_2016.html

Here we go again, if the rain allows. For once a non-floodlit game... From the Kent CCC website: "Kent Spitfires' home Royal London One-Day Cup group games in 2016 will all start at 11am.
Knockout games will revert to 10.30am starts in August or September as there is less available daylight.
All away fixtures wiil start at 11am with the exception of Sussex at Hove which is scheduled for a 1.30pm start.
The match at Essex on Wednesday 15 June was originally scheduled for 2pm but will now revert to a 11am start."So every one of Kent's RLC games is being played in daylight - with the solitary exception of the game at Hove. Why, oh why, do Sussex do this? They seem to be in a tiny minority of counties that thinks finshing these matches at 10 o'clock at night is a good idea...it's not even as though playing under floodlights is bringing the club any success as we haven't won a 50 overs game since Aug 2014. Does the club have any rationale for the bizarre timing of these fixtures? You won't catch me at any of the night games. I would have liked to go tomorrow but have tkts for A Midsummer Night's Dream, so will be going to Guildford on Tuesday instead, to see Surrey v Sussex in the RLC as that game also starts at 11 am.

"Sussex Sharks welcome Middlesex to The 1st Central County Ground this Sunday as the Royal London One-Day Cup continues (11.00am start)." Here is the squad: Will Beer Danny Briggs Ben Brown (wkt) Harry Finch George Garton Chris Jordan Ed Joyce Chris Nash Ollie Robinson Phil Salt Ajmal Shahzad Ross Taylor Luke Wells Luke Wright (c)

What does all this have to do with the match against Middlesex tomorrow? Well it was in response to your opening post : "For once a non-floodlit game." That other counties play these games as non-floodlit fixtures not as a Sunday one-off but on a regular basis seemed a perfectly relevant reponse after you had raised the issue of playing hours for 50 over games, don't you think? You also commented "Just think, if it were only 40 overs a side then it might be really popular and have some point to it". One might equally question "what does this have to do with the match against Middlesex tomorrow?" But I wouldn't dream of being so rude!

A strange kind of resolution as the match is reduced to 32 overs (fingers crossed) by the weather:
Adrian Harms @adrianharms 8m8 minutes ago
Middlesex win toss and will bowl floodlights about to be switched on

One way or another Sussex get the 2pm start to which the club is so wedded and they even get to turn their floodlights on; hhs gets a game that's closer to his favoured 40 overs than 50; and it has stopped raining as we head off to our open-air production of Midsummer Night's Dream !

ps : Joyce left out for Salt as 32 overs is closer to T20 than the 50 overs format?

Five batsmen, two reckless, two out of their depth.
