Just think how bad it would have been without lockdown.
I don't think it's an exaggeration to say we would probably be at 100,000 deaths by now, rather than 'merely' nearly 30,000.
Sometimes experts really do know more than someone at their keyboard.

glosexile, Ah, that pesky 'fat finger syndrome', although I noted the like was on-going for some period of time. So you are referring to what I wrote on another thread. Now that makes more sense. I suggest we move to that other thread to save our moderator the time passing over the posts. See you there.

... the eight-page letter from London solicitors ‘Onside Law’, for their client Colin Graves, to Cricinfo demanding apologies and damages for a particular George Dobell article on his ECB stewardship. Fortunately, for George and the cricket website, after a strong rap across the knuckles and a grovelling apology from ESPNCricinfo, the ECB did not pursue the case. I always wondered how that episode played out in the end. I honestly can't remember Cricinfo's apology and Dobell being admonished for his article. Have you got any more on this?

Bazpan,
My understanding is, the apology was carried out in a private capacity rather than a published written statement. It is interesting to note that Cricinfo was an annual shoo-in to win the ECB Award for digital content. Since the upset, the Cricketer Magazine have won this yearly accolade. To be fair, their website is a lot better now as Cricinfo have rested on their laurels and not improved the content or site's structure. I find navigating the Cricinfo website a nightmare given it is for world cricket and there are so many multifarious links.

My understanding is, the apology was carried out in a private capacity rather than a published written statement. Remind me not to hire Onside Law for any defamation suits I might want to bring. Anyone not privy to this secret apology could well have gone away with the impression that Graves' complaints were groundless.

Bazpan,
The case was never going to end up in court. The ECB fired a broadside across the Cricinfo bows in a rather feeble attempt of 'handbags at dawn'. And anyway, the media closed ranks, the cricket website stood by their man, and while Dobell desisted for the next 4 months, his personal vendetta against Graves then began again expressed by a series of snide tweets. The bottom-line is, you don't cross swords with ESPN. For even though their cable subscriptions have tanked in recent years, the sports company are owned by Disney who have an 80% financial interest and Hearst Communications 20%. That is where Cricinfo's power-base lies.

GD was consistent in his opposition - does that amount to a vendetta? Anyway,"vendetta" is a word usually used by someone with opposing views.

Fb, If you look up the meaning of 'Vendetta', one of the definitions is: A campaign against someone. Which sums up, imho, Dobell's stance towards Colin Graves. Anyway, Colin 'Corleone' is leaving soon, so Dobell may need someone else to have a pop at. Perhaps, an obvious choice might be Tom Harrison?
PS: I came across an article in the 'Grauniad' from two years ago where the journo describes Graves as "The Blazered Terminator."

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/52634903Well done ECB was my reaction to their new kids app. However, apparently the second question when first using the app is 'What is your favourite team'. Turns out there are only 8 choices, none of which have ever played a game... Why not include the counties and international sides too? Maybe include video clips and tips from players associated with those teams? Odd!

I got an email from The Hundred yesterday. They're offering a "sneak peek behind the curtain at the entertainment experience at The Hundred in summer 2021".
www.thehundred.com/info/entertainment-at-the-hundred
The 30-second video is just a generic montage of studio-bound cricketers and photos of cheering fans who could be watching anything. And lots of shots of mobile phone screens. The whole page gives the impression that even if you're at the ground you'll need to keep researching The Hundred on your phone if you want to understand what's going on. But there's more to the entertainment experience page than that. These are the main points:- "entertainment for the whole family to enjoy ... an entertaining experience for families and people of all ages ... The Hundred is here to welcome everyone ... simplified into an easily digestible & approachable format for everyone to enjoy ... A simple and exciting format designed for everyone to enjoy ... amazing sporting action to keep the whole family on the edge of their seats. We can’t wait to welcome you and your family ... An experience designed for the entire family to enjoy together"
It's a little bit repetitive, but families, enjoyment and simplicity never go out of style. There's a slightly martial quality to the repeated exhortations to cheer on teams you couldn't possibly care about, but as so often with Hundred promotional copy there's a kind of gauche earnestness to it; almost as if someone with no interest in cricket has been given the job of persuading others without an interest in cricket to acquire one.
"celebrate your new local team ... Who will you be cheering to win? ... Here come our stars! We want to give your heroes the welcome they deserve ... Welcome your heroes into the playing area with a huge cheer!"
Whoever did the graphics might have been exposed to 70s teen-pop cartoon series Josie & the Pussycats at an impressionable age.
One of them should be waving a tambourine, or strumming an electric guitar without any strings on it. Further down the page, Moeen Ali seems to be acknowledging the applause for reaching 18. Is 18 the new 50 in The Hundred, just as a batsman's T20 statistics will often tally his 30s?
Talking of simplifying the game, you'll have heard that the ECB are proposing to replace 'wickets' with 'outs' in The Hundred, so as to remove yet another obstacle for the newcomer. As with many Hundred innovations, I imagine this one might be jettisoned as soon as they've given it more than 10 seconds thought. Although, I would be pleased to hear commentators talking about a bowler "going outless", or that a team "badly needs an out here", or that in The Hundred it's a mistake to try and bowl out-taking deliveries with every ball, or a losing captain saying "We just lost outs at the wrong times".

It's pitiful, isn't it? The ECB are still making this up as they go along.

The Hindred couldn’t come at a worse time as far as I’m concerned. (Hindred was an accidental typo that autocorrect left as it was - I kinda like it). The 2020 season was almost non-existent - or, it seemed that way to me. Just as crowds will be coming back in 2021, Sussex will be fielding their 2nd XI in the One Day Cup while the better players are appearing for Southern Implosion and the like in The Hindred - I mean Hundred. Roll on 2022.
And, out of interest, can anyone name the eight sides competing? I can’t as you probably can guess from my effort.

While I am open to innovation and keep an open mind about "The Hindred", the problem goes back to Giles Clarke when ECB Chairman and his feud with Lalit Modi soon after the IPL was first mooted. Clarke refused an EPL due to his run-in with Modi back in 2006 and the rest is history.
Here we are 15 years on and the IPL is considered, by far and away, to be the most successful world cricket tournament, while the ECB is attempting "catch up" by introducing a brand new version of the format. A highly dangerous move at a dangerous time in world history. The timing could not be at a worse period.
The Hindred is marmite. It will either be a roaring success or a disastrous failure. Fortunately, SKY Sports appear to be the mugs here and will take up a majority of the financial slack, but then Murdoch has always loved a gamble.
